### Curious Level
160 million years ago, where Saudi Arabia is today, there was a warm shallow sea. Billions of tiny sea creatures lived and died in this sea. Their bodies sank to the seafloor, were buried under kilometres of rock, and heat and pressure slowly cooked them into crude oil over millions of years. The oil floated upward until it hit Ghawar's dome-shaped rock layer and became trapped.

- **Stage 1 (160–145 Ma):** Hanifa and Tuwaiq Mountain formations accumulated organic-rich sediment in anoxic conditions. Phytoplankton and cyanobacteria provided the organic material.
- **Stage 2 (100–60 Ma):** Burial to 3–4 km raised temperature to 60–120°C. Organic matter transformed into kerogen, then into liquid crude oil — the "oil window."
- **Stage 3:** Oil migrated upward through carrier beds until it met the Ghawar anticline capped by impermeable Hith Anhydrite.

Engineers drill holes — sometimes going sideways underground for kilometres — into the oil-soaked rock. The oil flows up under pressure. At the surface, a GOSP separates oil from gas and water. Aramco injects seawater into the edges of the field to push the oil toward production wells.
