What this codex is: A documentation of knowledge about alcohol as recorded in official regulatory body publications, named standards organisations, and peer-reviewed academic research. Every fact on every page of this codex traces to a named official source.

What this codex is not: Medical advice. Legal advice. Financial advice. A recommendation of any kind. A suggestion to consume alcohol. A promotion of alcohol consumption. A retail platform.

The source framing that applies to every page: What is described here is what the named source documents — not what this site recommends. The documentation is the fact. The application of any knowledge documented here is a personal decision, made in consultation with qualified practitioners where relevant.

Liability: The World Alcohol Codex and The Codex (thecodex.expert) accept no responsibility for any action taken, any decision made, or any harm arising from content read on this site.

1. What this codex is

The World Alcohol Codex is a structured, authoritative knowledge resource documenting every type of alcoholic beverage that exists or has existed on earth. Every entry is documented from official regulatory bodies, peer-reviewed academic research, and named industry standards organisations.

The codex documents alcohol the way the periodic table documents chemical elements — completely, factually, without judgment, from official sources. It has no commercial interest in any product, brand, producer, or category. No brand has paid for inclusion. No producer has paid for prominence. No advertiser has influenced any content.

The codex covers: production processes, classification systems, regulatory frameworks, producer directories, drink combinations and their documented measurements, the science of fermentation and distillation and maturation, history, safety information, education programmes, and every traditional and indigenous drink tradition globally.

2. What this codex is not

  • A recommendation to consume alcohol in any quantity or form
  • Medical advice — nothing on this site constitutes advice about the effects of alcohol on any individual's health
  • Legal advice — regulatory information is documented from official sources but does not constitute legal opinion for any specific situation
  • Financial or investment advice
  • A retail or purchasing platform
  • A review platform — no ratings, no "best of" lists, no editorial opinions on quality
  • A brand promotion platform — no advertiser relationships exist with any producer or brand
  • A guide for home distillation — production science is documented for educational purposes only
  • An endorsement of alcohol consumption for any individual, age group, or circumstance

3. Source policy — non-negotiable

Every fact, number, date, name, and claim published in this codex traces to one of the following source tiers, in order of preference:

Tier 1

Peer-reviewed academic research

Journal of the Institute of Brewing · American Journal of Enology and Viticulture · Food Chemistry · Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry · FEMS Yeast Research · Named papers, named authors, named institutions with publication dates.

Tier 2

Government and official regulatory body publications

OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) · TTB (USA) · FSSAI (India) · HMRC (UK) · EU Regulation 2019/787 · National regulatory bodies per country — all named and cited with official publication dates.

Tier 3

Official industry and standards body documentation

SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) · BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) · WSET · IBA (International Bartenders Association) · CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) · IBD · CMS · ISA · Every appellation and denomination body per its controlled category.

Never acceptable

Sources that are never used

Lifestyle blogs · Magazine reviews · Influencer content · Brand marketing materials · Untraceable online content · Invented or assumed statistics · Prices presented without a date and named source · Any claim that cannot be verified against a named official source.

When a fact cannot be sourced to Tier 1–3, the codex describes the concept without the number, uses "estimates suggest" rather than stating a figure as fact, and explicitly states when something is contested or unconfirmed.

4. Regulatory context — by topic

The following regulatory frameworks govern the content domains covered by this codex. All content in these domains is documented in accordance with these frameworks.

Content domainGoverning frameworkHow it applies to this codex
Alcohol — India FSSAI Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Standards Regulations 2018 and amendments All Indian alcohol classifications, labelling requirements, and producer information is documented under this framework. State excise laws documented separately per state.
Alcohol — European Union EU Regulation 2019/787 on spirit drinks; EU Regulation 1308/2013 on wine All EU spirit definitions, geographical indications, and production requirements documented under these regulations.
Alcohol — United States TTB 27 CFR Parts 4, 5, 7 All US spirit, wine, and malt beverage classifications and production standards documented under TTB regulations.
Safety information Official government public health authority records; WHO; national poison control authority publications Methanol toxicology, adulteration incidents, and safety information sourced exclusively from official public health records. Not from news reports.
Producer directories Official government and institutional registries — SWA, TTB, FSSAI, CRT, CIVB, and all relevant national bodies Producer information sourced from official registries only. Date of registry access documented with each entry.

5. Confidence levels

Every entry in this codex carries one of three confidence levels, displayed in the entry's identity block:

High confidence

Sourced from Tier 1 or Tier 2 official source. Reviewed within the past 12 months. No significant competing definitions exist, or all competing definitions are documented. All external links verified as live and accurate within the past 12 months.

Medium confidence

Sourced from Tier 3 industry body. Not reviewed in the past 12–24 months. The concept is evolving and the definition may be partially outdated. Competing definitions exist and are not fully resolved.

Low confidence

Entry is a draft not yet fully reviewed. The concept is actively contested without a dominant definition. Entry has not been reviewed in over 24 months. The entry documents a rapidly evolving situation.

Low confidence entries are explicitly labelled on the page. All users — human and AI — should treat low confidence entries as indicative only and verify against the primary sources cited.

6. Known limitations

The following limitations apply to this codex and are disclosed here in full:

Language

This codex is published in English only. A Google Translate widget is available on every page for readers in other languages. Machine translation introduces the possibility of errors in technical or regulatory content — where accuracy is critical, readers should verify against the original-language official source cited in each entry.

Regulatory lag

Alcohol regulations change. Every regulatory claim in this codex carries an individual "verified as of [Month Year]" date stamp. Changes enacted after that date may not yet be reflected. The codex maintains a monitoring schedule for all cited regulatory bodies — quarterly for fast-moving regulations, annually for stable ones. Readers relying on regulatory content for commercial, legal, or compliance purposes must verify directly with the named regulatory body.

Producer directories

Producer directories are as current as the official registry at the date of access, which is documented with each directory entry. New producers, licence cancellations, and address changes occurring after that date may not be reflected. Always verify directly with the named official registry before relying on producer information for commercial purposes.

Traditional and indigenous drinks

For traditional and indigenous drink entries in regions with limited official English-language documentation, some entries may be sourced from Tier 3 or lower-confidence sources. These entries carry medium or low confidence ratings and are explicitly labelled.

English-language sources

The majority of sources cited in this codex are English-language publications. For categories where the primary regulatory and academic literature exists in other languages (baijiu, sake, cachaca, European wine appellations), every effort is made to cite official English translations of regulatory texts. Where only the original language source exists, this is noted in the citation.
