Bitcoin spent its first two years alone. Its code was open source, though — anyone could copy it, tweak a few parameters, and launch their own coin. In 2011, people started doing exactly that. Some genuinely tried to improve on Bitcoin. Some chased quick money. One was a joke about a dog. Remarkably, examples of all three are still around today.
The first copies (2011)
Namecoin arrived first (April 2011), attempting decentralised domain names. But the altcoin that defined the template was Litecoin (October 2011): Bitcoin's code with faster blocks and a different mining algorithm, marketed with one of crypto's most effective slogans — "silver to Bitcoin's gold." It didn't need to beat Bitcoin; it just needed to be next to Bitcoin. Hundreds of copies followed, most changing little more than the name and the logo.
A different path: XRP (2012)
Not everything was a Bitcoin clone. Ripple's XRP abandoned mining entirely — all coins created upfront, transactions validated by a chosen set of servers, and the target customer wasn't cypherpunks but banks. It ignited an argument that still hasn't ended: if a company controls most of the supply and courts the financial system, is it really a cryptocurrency? A decade later, a US courtroom would spend years on roughly that question.
The exchange era — and its first disaster
To buy any of these coins, you needed an exchange, and the early ones were hobby projects handling serious money. The biggest, Mt. Gox — originally built for trading game cards — was processing the majority of the world's Bitcoin trades by 2013. In February 2014 it collapsed, having lost roughly 850,000 BTC to years of undetected theft. It remains the era's defining lesson, compressed into five words: not your keys, not your coins.
The first mainstream mania (2013)
In late 2013, Bitcoin crossed $1,000 for the first time and the world's media noticed. Millions heard about crypto for the first time — mostly as a story about overnight millionaires. The price crashed through 2014, beginning the boom-bust rhythm the market has followed ever since. Two weeks after that peak, in December 2013, two engineers launched a parody of altcoin mania: Dogecoin. The joke outlived almost everything it was mocking, and accidentally founded the memecoin genre that returns every cycle.
The privacy wave (2014)
Bitcoin's ledger is public forever — a feature for auditors, a problem for privacy. In 2014, Monero launched with privacy built into the protocol itself, alongside Dash and later Zcash (2016), which brought zero-knowledge cryptography to money. The privacy coins carried the original cypherpunk flame — and became the coins regulators would name first whenever they worried about crypto.
Quiet foundations (2014–2015)
Two of the era's least glamorous launches turned out to matter most. Stellar (2014) pointed the payments idea at remittances and the unbanked. And the first dollar-pegged tokens appeared — Tether's earliest version among them — inventing the stablecoin, the boring product that would quietly become crypto's most used.
Ethereum changes the question (2015)
Every altcoin so far had asked "what if Bitcoin, but different?" In July 2015, Ethereum asked something bigger: what if a blockchain could run programs, not just payments? Smart contracts turned crypto from digital money into a platform — the foundation for DeFi, NFTs, and most of what this site documents. The altcoin era's thousand experiments suddenly had somewhere to build.
The DAO — the era's cliffhanger (2016)
Ethereum's first flagship application, a crowdfunded investment fund called The DAO, raised $150M and was promptly drained through a smart-contract bug. Ethereum's community reversed the theft with a hard fork; dissenters kept the original chain alive as Ethereum Classic. "Code is law" had met reality — and the stage was set for the ICO mania of 2017.
What the era taught
Three lessons from 2011–2016 still hold. Most altcoins die — of the thousands launched, a handful survived with real relevance. Custody is everything — Mt. Gox's lesson gets re-taught every cycle to those who skip the history. And narratives matter as much as technology — "silver to gold," a dog meme, "the world computer" — the coins that survived all told a story people could repeat.
