Crypto regulation varies enormously from country to country โ what's freely legal in one place may be tightly restricted in another, and the rules are changing fast everywhere. These guides explain how major jurisdictions treat cryptocurrency: its legal status, how it's taxed, how exchanges are licensed, and which authorities are in charge. Everything here is drawn from official government and regulatory sources.
Because Crypto Codex is India-focused, our India coverage is the deepest โ but understanding how other large markets approach crypto helps put India's rules in context.

How to read regulation news sensibly
Crypto regulation generates a lot of dramatic headlines, many of them misleading. A few things to keep in mind. Rules differ by what the asset is โ a token treated as a security faces very different rules from one treated as a commodity or as plain property. Rules also differ by activity โ holding crypto, trading it, running an exchange, and issuing a new token are each regulated differently. And "banned" rarely means what it sounds like; often it refers to a specific activity (like banks dealing in crypto) rather than ownership being illegal.
Above all, regulation is genuinely in flux worldwide. Treat any single guide โ including ours โ as a snapshot, verify anything that affects real decisions against the official source, and remember that nothing here is legal or tax advice.
