Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton (25 December 1642 – 20 March 1727) was an English mathematician, physicist, and astronomer whose 1687 Principia Mathematica established the three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation, unifying terrestrial and celestial mechanics under a single mathematical framework for the first time in history.
Major contributions
- Formulated the three laws of motion, the axiomatic foundation of classical mechanics for over two centuries
- Formulated the law of universal gravitation, showing the same force governs falling objects on Earth and the orbits of the Moon and planets
- Co-invented calculus (independently of, and in a priority dispute with, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz), providing the mathematical machinery needed to state and solve the laws of motion precisely
- Conducted foundational experiments in optics, showing that white light is composed of a spectrum of colours, and built the first practical reflecting telescope
- Developed an early corpuscular (particle) theory of light, which competed with the wave theory of light for over a century

Career
Newton entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661. During 1665–1667, when the university closed due to the Great Plague, Newton returned to his family home at Woolsthorpe and, during this period later called his annus mirabilis ("miracle year"), developed his early ideas on calculus, optics, and gravitation. He was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1669, a position he held for over three decades.
In 1687, with the encouragement and financial support of astronomer Edmond Halley, Newton published the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, widely regarded as one of the most important scientific works ever published. Newton later served as Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint (from 1696 and 1699 respectively), overseeing a major recoinage of English currency, and was elected President of the Royal Society in 1703, a position he held until his death. He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705.

Historical context
Newton worked during the Scientific Revolution, building directly on the foundations laid by Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, and Galileo Galilei. Kepler had empirically derived his three laws of planetary motion from Tycho Brahe's observational data, and Galileo had established key principles of terrestrial motion and inertia — but neither had shown these were consequences of a single, deeper underlying law. Newton's achievement in the Principia was to derive Kepler's laws as mathematical consequences of his own laws of motion combined with an inverse-square law of gravitation, unifying what had previously been separate empirical rules for the heavens and separate empirical rules for the Earth into one coherent physical theory.
Newton's priority dispute with Leibniz over the invention of calculus was one of the most bitter scientific controversies of the era, and consumed much of Newton's later life; historians of mathematics now generally regard the two as having developed calculus independently, using different notations, with Leibniz's notation ultimately proving more influential in continental Europe.
