Nāma Mantra · Dvādaśākṣarī (Twelve Syllables)
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya
Deity: Kṛṣṇa-Viṣṇu (as Vāsudeva)
Syllables: 12 (Dvādaśākṣarī)
Source: Bhāgavata Purāṇa tradition
Canonical Definition
Oṃ Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya, the Dvādaśākṣarī (“twelve-syllable”) mantra, is a principal Vaiṣṇava mantra addressing Kṛṣṇa-Viṣṇu as Vāsudeva and as Bhagavān (the possessor of all divine glories/qualities). It is especially associated with the Bhāgavata Purāṇa and Pāñcarātra Vaiṣṇava traditions, and stands alongside the Aṣṭākṣarī (Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya) as one of the most widely used Vaiṣṇava devotional formulas.
Etymology: bhagavat — “possessing bhaga” (glory, fortune, majesty), a title applied to a fully divine being; bhagavate is its dative form. Vāsudeva — a name for Kṛṣṇa meaning “son of Vasudeva” (his father) though also read theologically as connected to vasu (dwelling/wealth) + deva (god), i.e. “the god in whom all things dwell.”
What the mantra says
How to read this Compare the grammatical shape here directly against Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya: both use the namaḥ (here namo, by sandhi) + dative-epithet salutation pattern, with this mantra inserting an additional dative epithet (bhagavate) before the name itself — giving it two syllables more than the Aṣṭākṣarī.
In plain translation: “Salutation to the Blessed Lord [Bhagavān] Vāsudeva.” The insertion of bhagavate before the deity’s name emphasizes his complete divinity and possession of all six traditionally enumerated divine qualities (glory, might, fame, beauty, knowledge, and dispassion).
How it is used
This mantra is central to Bhāgavata and Pāñcarātra Vaiṣṇava devotional practice and is recited in daily worship, japa, and at significant life events, often alongside recitation from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa itself.
Word by Word
How to read this Notice the double dative construction (bhagavate vāsudevāya) — both words describe the same being in the same case, a common Sanskrit pattern (apposition) also seen in the Gāyatrī mantra’s savituḥ devasya pairing on this codex.
| ॐ | oṃ | sacred syllable | The praṇava, prefixed. |
| नमो | namo | indeclinable (sandhi form of namaḥ) | “Salutation” — visarga sandhi before the following vowel-initial word. |
| भगवते | bhagavate | dative singular | “To the Blessed/Glorious One” — a title marking full divinity. |
| वासुदेवाय | vāsudevāya | dative singular | “To Vāsudeva” — the specific name of the deity saluted. |
Textual history
This mantra is closely associated with the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, a major Vaiṣṇava devotional text, and with the Pāñcarātra tradition’s theology of Vāsudeva as the supreme, complete form of divinity from whom other divine emanations (vyūhas) proceed.
Textual note The specific Pāñcarātra doctrine of Vāsudeva as the source of a sequence of divine emanations (vyūhas: Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, Aniruddha) is a distinct theological elaboration developed within that tradition — worth naming explicitly rather than assuming this mantra’s theology is identical to every other Vaiṣṇava school’s.
Interpretation
The inclusion of bhagavat (“possessing full glory”) gives this mantra a slightly different theological emphasis from the simpler Aṣṭākṣarī — explicitly foregrounding the deity’s complete, unconditioned divinity as itself part of what is saluted, not only his name.
How to read this Read this mantra alongside the Aṣṭākṣarī (Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya) as two related but textually and theologically distinct Vaiṣṇava formulas — the tradition does not treat them as simple interchangeable synonyms, even though both are namaḥ-pattern salutations to forms of Viṣṇu-Kṛṣṇa.
