Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Haritakyadi Varga
Bhringaraj keshyo rasayanah — Bhringaraj is Keshya (nourishing to hair) and Rasayana (rejuvenative). It prevents premature greying, promotes hair growth, nourishes the scalp channels, and simultaneously protects the liver. Among all herbs documented for hair health, Bhringaraj is the most specifically and consistently cited.

Classical applications

Keshya (hair conditions): External application of Bhringaraj Svarasa (fresh juice) to the scalp is documented as preventing premature greying (Palitya), hair loss (Khalitya), and promoting hair growth. Bhringaraj Taila (medicated oil with Bhringaraj as primary herb) is the standard classical head oil for hair and scalp conditions. The Bhavaprakasha and local Nighantus across India consistently document Bhringaraj as the first-listed Keshya herb.

Yakritvikar (liver conditions): Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita both document Bhringaraj for liver conditions — specifically for Kamala (jaundice) alongside Kutki and Kalmegh. The bitter quality and cold potency reduce Pitta in the liver channels. Modern research supports this: wedelolactone from Eclipta alba has documented hepatoprotective activity in multiple studies.

Wedelolactone — hepatoprotective and hair pharmacology
Wedelolactone and demethylwedelolactone from Eclipta alba have documented hepatoprotective effects (Research published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Saxena et al., 1993) — consistent with the classical Yakritvikar documentation. For hair conditions, research on Eclipta alba extracts documents promotion of hair follicle cycling from telogen (resting) to anagen (growing) phase, consistent with the classical Keshya documentation (Datta et al., 2009, Archives of Dermatological Research). API Part I, Vol IV specifies wedelolactone as the marker compound for quality standardisation.
