What Rasayana means

Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana 1 defines Rasayana through its effects: that which produces long life, memory, intelligence, freedom from disease, youth, lustre and complexion, strength of voice, bodily vigour, and the highest development of the sense organs. A preparation or practice that produces all these effects simultaneously is a Rasayana in the classical sense.

Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana 1.7
Labhopayo hi shastanam rasadinam rasayanam -- Rasayana is the means of obtaining the best quality of Rasa (plasma) and all subsequent Dhatus. It acts at the level of Rasa Dhatu and progressively enhances all seven tissues.

Two classical protocols

Kutipraveshika Rasayana: The intensive protocol -- residential retreat of 30--90 days, preceded by complete Panchakarma purification, with specific daily protocols and preparations documented in Charaka Samhita.

Vatatapika Rasayana: The ambulatory protocol -- Rasayana preparations and practices incorporated into daily life. Chyawanprash daily, Ashwagandha with milk, complete Dinacharya. Accessible to most people and documented as producing significant results over consistent practice.

Primary Rasayana herbs

The Vayasthapana (age-arresting) group documented in Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 4: Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Guduchi, Amalaki, Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Vidari, and Bala.

Ahara as first Rasayana
Charaka Samhita documents the hierarchy: correct the diet first (Ahara), then lifestyle (Vihara), then herbs (Aushadha). Rasayana preparations are the third step -- they build on a foundation of correct diet and daily practice. Chyawanprash taken daily alongside a Kapha-aggravating diet and sedentary lifestyle produces a fraction of its classical effect.
