Classical definition

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 17 documents Ojas as the ultimate refined product of all seven Dhatu's metabolic processes -- the finest essence produced when each Dhatvagni completes its transformation with full efficiency. Ojas is not added from outside -- it is the measure of the body's own metabolic excellence.

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 17.74
Ojah saram param dehe sarvadhatu samudbhavam / Yasmad ojo viyuktasya jeevanam nopalabhyate -- Ojas is the essential substance of the body, arising from all the Dhatus. Without Ojas, life cannot be sustained.

Two classical types

Para Ojas: Eight drops (Ashta Bindu) in the Hridaya (heart). Life-sustaining -- its destruction is death. Cannot be replenished.

Apara Ojas: Half an Anjali (approximately 30--60ml) distributed throughout the body. Governs immunity (Vyadhikshamatva), vitality, mental stability, and biological vigour. This is the Ojas that Rasayana and lifestyle practices build and protect.

Signs of adequate Ojas

Charaka Samhita documents: clear bright eyes; lustrous skin; physical strength; mental clarity and emotional stability; sound sleep; strong immunity; calm confidence; capacity to withstand stress without depletion.

Causes of Ojas depletion

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 11 documents the primary causes: excessive physical exertion beyond half-capacity; chronic disease; mental anguish, fear, and grief; fasting beyond the therapeutic window; excessive sexual activity (Shukra converts directly to Ojas); injury; and habitual Viruddha Ahara.

Three stages of Ojas Kshaya
Visransa (displacement): Ojas moves from its normal location; joint discomfort, weakness. Recoverable with Rasayana. Vyapada (functional loss): Ojas fails to perform its functions; marked weakness, disturbed sleep. Recoverable with sustained Rasayana. Kshaya (actual depletion): Life-threatening loss of Ojas substance; requires Panchakarma followed by intensive Rasayana.

Building and protecting Ojas

Abhyanga (daily oil massage); adequate Nidra (primary replenishment period); Sattvic diet with Madhura Rasa; Chyawanprash daily; Ashwagandha with warm milk; emotional stability; and moderate regular exercise.

Ojas and immunity
Charaka Samhita's documentation of Vyadhikshamatva (immunity) as dependent on Ojas parallels modern psychoneuroimmunology -- that chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and nutritional deficiency suppress immunity systemically. The classical framework described this mechanism two millennia before the modern evidence.
