Jatamansi medhya nidrajanan Vishagna — Jatamansi is Medhya (cognitive-enhancing), produces sleep (Nidrajanan), is antitoxic (Vishaghna), and calms aggravated Vata and Pitta in the nervous channels. It is the primary sedative herb for conditions where the mind is agitated, overactive, or cannot settle to sleep.

Classical documentation

Charaka Samhita documents Jatamansi in the Medhya (cognitive-enhancing) group alongside Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, and Guduchi. Its specific differentiation: while Brahmi and Shankhpushpi primarily enhance cognitive performance and memory, Jatamansi specifically addresses the anxiety-driven cognitive impairment — conditions where the mind is active but not clear, where sleep cannot be achieved because the mental activity will not settle. The classical compound Sarpagandha-Jatamansi combination addresses both components: Sarpagandha reduces the excessive neural activity; Jatamansi nourishes the neural tissue depleted by chronic anxiety.

Nardosinone — sedative pharmacology
Nardosinone, spirojatamol, and aristolane sesquiterpenes from Nardostachys jatamansi rhizome have documented GABA-A receptor modulation activity — the same mechanism as benzodiazepine sedatives, but as partial modulators rather than full agonists (lower dependence risk). Research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology and Phytomedicine documents anxiolytic and sedative effects in animal models consistent with the classical documentation. Human clinical trials are limited.
Conservation status — critical
Jatamansi grows in the Himalayan alpine zone (3500–5000m) and is critically endangered from overharvesting. Listed on CITES Appendix II (regulated international trade) and Schedule VI of India's Wildlife Protection Act (restricted domestic collection). Cultivation programmes exist but are limited. Purchase only from licensed manufacturers using documented sustainable cultivation or legal sourced material with cultivation certificates. Wild-harvested Jatamansi from India is legally restricted.
