Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Guduchyadi Varga
Jyotishmati buddhida... medha vardhaka -- Jyotishmati gives Buddhi (intellect) and increases Medha (cognitive capacity). The seed oil, administered in small doses with warm milk, is documented as one of the most potent classical Medhya preparations.

Classical documentation

Bhavaprakasha documents Jyotishmati seed oil as the primary Medhya preparation beyond the four Medhya Rasayana herbs of Charaka Samhita -- specifically for conditions of memory impairment, cognitive decline, and study-related mental fatigue. Classical administration: 5--10 drops of seed oil with warm milk before sleep. The oil is also documented for Abhyanga to the head (Shiro Abhyanga) for cognitive and sleep conditions.

Modern pharmacology -- memory and neuroprotection
Celastrus paniculatus seed oil has been documented in multiple animal studies for improvements in cognitive performance, memory retention, and learning. Research published in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior and the Journal of Ethnopharmacology documents effects consistent with acetylcholinesterase inhibition and neuroprotective activity. Human clinical trials are limited, making this an area of ongoing research.
Dose sensitivity
Jyotishmati seed oil is potent and dose-sensitive -- classical texts specify small doses (5--10 drops) rather than tablespoon quantities. Excess doses can cause digestive discomfort. Self-administration beyond the documented small-dose range requires practitioner guidance.
