Kanchanara shothaghno lekhano gandamalaghnih -- Kanchanara reduces swellings (Shotha), is Lekhana (scraping/reducing of accumulations), and is Gandamalaghnah (destroyer of Gandamala -- lymph node swellings and neck glandular conditions).

Classical documentation

Charaka Samhita documents Kanchanara in the Shothaghna (anti-oedema) and Lekhana groups. Its primary classical indications: Galaganda (neck glandular swellings -- encompassing goitre and thyroid conditions), Gandamala (cervical lymphadenopathy), Apachi (scrofula-type conditions), and Granthi (cystic swellings). The Lekhana action -- documented as scraping accumulated Kapha-Meda from the glandular tissue -- is the mechanistic basis for its thyroid application.

Kanchanara Guggulu: Kanchanara bark + Guggulu resin + Trikatu + Triphala + Varuna bark + other herbs. The combination provides Kanchanara's specific Lekhana action on glandular tissue, Guggulu's anti-inflammatory and Lekhana action, and Trikatu's channel-clearing Deepana action. Documented for Galaganda across all three Dosha types.

Iodine content and thyroid
Preliminary research has documented iodine-related compounds in Kanchanara bark. The classical documentation predates knowledge of iodine's role in thyroid function by approximately two millennia, but the clinical convergence -- a bark herb specifically for neck glandular conditions in a region where iodine deficiency goitre was prevalent -- is consistent. Modern research is ongoing.
