Kanchanara
Kanchanara is the primary classical herb for Galaganda (glandular conditions of the neck including thyroid conditions) and all Kapha-Meda accumulations in lymphatic and glandular tissue. Ashtanga Hridayam specifically documents Kanchanara bark as Lekhana (scraping/reducing) for glandular conditions. Kanchanara Guggulu -- the compound formulation -- is the most prescribed classical preparation for thyroid and lymphatic conditions in modern Ayurvedic practice.
Classical documentation
Charaka Samhita documents Kanchanara in the Shothaghna (anti-oedema) and Lekhana groups. Its primary classical indications: Galaganda (neck glandular swellings -- encompassing goitre and thyroid conditions), Gandamala (cervical lymphadenopathy), Apachi (scrofula-type conditions), and Granthi (cystic swellings). The Lekhana action -- documented as scraping accumulated Kapha-Meda from the glandular tissue -- is the mechanistic basis for its thyroid application.
Kanchanara Guggulu: Kanchanara bark + Guggulu resin + Trikatu + Triphala + Varuna bark + other herbs. The combination provides Kanchanara's specific Lekhana action on glandular tissue, Guggulu's anti-inflammatory and Lekhana action, and Trikatu's channel-clearing Deepana action. Documented for Galaganda across all three Dosha types.
