Kapikacchu
Kapikacchu is the classical Vajikarana (reproductive vitality) herb with the most direct modern pharmacological documentation. The seed is the primary medicinal part. Classical texts document it specifically for Shukra Kshaya (semen deficiency), Klaibya (sexual dysfunction), and Vatavyadhi (Vata disorders). The discovery that Mucuna pruriens seeds contain 3--6% L-DOPA -- the dopamine precursor -- provided a direct pharmacological mechanism for multiple classical documentations simultaneously.
Classical documentation
Ashtanga Hridayam, Vatavyadhi chapter documents Kapikacchu specifically for Vata conditions of the nervous system -- a documentation that takes on new significance with the discovery of L-DOPA content. Classical indications: Shukra Kshaya (semen deficiency), Klaibya (sexual dysfunction), general Vata Kshaya (nervous system depletion), and tremor conditions (Kampa -- trembling, the classical description closest to Parkinson's-type conditions). The classical compound Kapikacchu Churna with Ashwagandha and milk is one of the most prescribed classical Vajikarana preparations.
