Kapikacchu beejamadhuram... shukralam vajikaram param -- Kapikacchu seeds are sweet, and are the primary Vajikarana (reproductive vitality) herb. They enhance Shukra quantity and quality, and treat Klaibya (sexual dysfunction).

Classical documentation

Ashtanga Hridayam, Vatavyadhi chapter documents Kapikacchu specifically for Vata conditions of the nervous system -- a documentation that takes on new significance with the discovery of L-DOPA content. Classical indications: Shukra Kshaya (semen deficiency), Klaibya (sexual dysfunction), general Vata Kshaya (nervous system depletion), and tremor conditions (Kampa -- trembling, the classical description closest to Parkinson's-type conditions). The classical compound Kapikacchu Churna with Ashwagandha and milk is one of the most prescribed classical Vajikarana preparations.

L-DOPA and multiple classical documentations
Mucuna pruriens seeds contain 3--6% L-DOPA (levodopa -- the dopamine precursor). This single finding explains multiple classical documentations simultaneously: Vajikarana (dopamine is essential for sexual function and libido); Vatahara (dopamine deficit produces the tremor, rigidity, and slow movement that classical Vata Kshaya describes); Balya (dopaminergic activation improves motor function and perceived vitality). Multiple clinical trials have documented Mucuna pruriens seed powder for Parkinson's disease with effect sizes comparable to conventional L-DOPA -- and with documented lower incidence of dyskinesia side effects attributed to the presence of other compounds in the whole seed.
Preparation note
The seed pods of Mucuna pruriens cause intense skin irritation (from serotonin content in the pod hairs). The seeds themselves, once separated from the pods and processed (typically by boiling and drying), do not cause this irritation. Classical preparations specify processed seed powder. Unprocessed raw seeds require Shodhana (purification processing).
