Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana 30.8
Musali madhura sheeta Vajikara... shukrala -- Musali is sweet, cold, Vajikarana (reproductive vitality-promoting) and Shukrala (increases the quantity and quality of Shukra/semen). It is the primary herb for reproductive depletion conditions.

Classical documentation

Bhavaprakasha classifies Safed Musali as a primary Vajikarana herb with the following documented properties: Madhura Vipaka (sweet post-digestive, nourishing to Shukra and all Dhatus), Sheeta Virya (cooling, reducing Pitta-type inflammatory damage to reproductive tissue), and specifically Shukrala (Shukra-increasing). Classical indications: Shukra Kshaya (semen deficiency), Klaibyata (sexual dysfunction), Daurbalya (general debility), and Stanya Kshaya (inadequate breast milk). The combination of reproductive nourishment and lactation support reflects Musali's classification as a primarily Rasa-Rakta-Shukra building herb.

Modern pharmacology
Chlorophytum borivilianum tuberous roots contain steroidal saponins (Borivilianosides A-H) and alkaloids. Research published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine documents increased testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm motility in animal studies. Human clinical trials are limited but promising. The saponin content provides the pharmacological basis for the classical Vajikarana documentation.
Adulteration -- critical concern
Safed Musali is one of the most heavily adulterated herbs in the Indian commercial market. High demand and high price have driven widespread substitution with cheaper species (Asparagus racemosus roots, Curculigo orchioides, and starch-added preparations). API specifies specific gravity, total saponin content (minimum 1%), and chromatographic identification markers. Purchase only from Ministry of AYUSH-licensed manufacturers with documented API-compliant saponin testing.
