Nirgundi
Nirgundi is one of the most versatile classical Vatahara herbs -- documented in Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam for pain conditions (Shoola), neurological Vata disorders (Vatavyadhi), joint conditions (particularly Amavata and Gridhrasi/sciatica-type), and as an important herb in Panchakarma steam preparations. The leaf is the primary medicinal part, used both internally (as Kashaya) and externally (as steam fomentation and Lepa).
Classical documentation
Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana documents Nirgundi in the Vatavyadhi (Vata disorders) chapter alongside Dashamoola as a primary leaf for steam preparations. Ashtanga Hridayam documents Nirgundi Taila (medicated oil prepared with Nirgundi leaf Svarasa) specifically for Gridhrasi (sciatica-type conditions), Ardita (facial palsy), and Manyastambha (cervical conditions). The external application through medicated steam (Patra Pinda Sweda -- bolus of herb leaves used for massage) is the most characteristic Kerala-tradition use of Nirgundi.
Patra Pinda Sweda (leaf bolus massage) using Nirgundi along with Eranda (castor) and other herbs is a Kerala Panchakarma procedure specifically documented for musculoskeletal Vata conditions. The warm bolus of leaves is used to massage the affected joints and spine, with the volatile compounds penetrating during simultaneous steam.
