Nirgundi patra swedam... Vatavyadhihar -- Steam fomentation with Nirgundi leaves is documented as among the most potent Vatahara Swedana preparations. Its volatile compounds penetrate the skin channels during steam therapy and directly reduce Vata in the musculoskeletal and neurological channels.

Classical documentation

Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana documents Nirgundi in the Vatavyadhi (Vata disorders) chapter alongside Dashamoola as a primary leaf for steam preparations. Ashtanga Hridayam documents Nirgundi Taila (medicated oil prepared with Nirgundi leaf Svarasa) specifically for Gridhrasi (sciatica-type conditions), Ardita (facial palsy), and Manyastambha (cervical conditions). The external application through medicated steam (Patra Pinda Sweda -- bolus of herb leaves used for massage) is the most characteristic Kerala-tradition use of Nirgundi.

Patra Pinda Sweda (leaf bolus massage) using Nirgundi along with Eranda (castor) and other herbs is a Kerala Panchakarma procedure specifically documented for musculoskeletal Vata conditions. The warm bolus of leaves is used to massage the affected joints and spine, with the volatile compounds penetrating during simultaneous steam.

Modern pharmacology
Vitex negundo leaf contains flavonoids (casticin, isoorientin), iridoid glycosides, and essential oils with documented anti-inflammatory (COX-2 inhibition), analgesic, and antibacterial properties. Research in Phytomedicine documents significant anti-inflammatory effects in arthritis models, consistent with the classical Shothaghna and Shoolahara documentation.
