Shallaki (Boswellia)
Shallaki is the Indian Frankincense -- the oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata. Classical texts document it as Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), Shoolahara (analgesic), and specifically for Sandhi (joint) conditions. Its modern pharmacological documentation -- particularly around AKBA (3-O-Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) -- has made it one of the best-evidenced Ayurvedic herbs in randomised controlled trials, with multiple studies specifically for knee osteoarthritis showing significant clinical benefit.
Classical documentation
Charaka Samhita documents Shallaki in the Shothaghna (anti-oedema/anti-inflammatory) and Vedanasthapana (analgesic) groups. Sushruta Samhita documents the resin in wound healing (Vrana) preparations. Classical compound preparations: Shallaki Guggulu (with Guggulu resin -- combining the anti-inflammatory Boswellia with Guggulu's Lekhana action for joint conditions); Shallaki Taila (external oil for joint massage); and compound Churna preparations for musculoskeletal Vata conditions.
