The exchange advantage
BNB Chain's defining feature is its link to Binance. The exchange's enormous user base provides an easy on-ramp, and the chain's low fees and Ethereum compatibility made it an early favourite for users priced out of Ethereum. By raw transaction count, it has often been among the busiest chains in crypto.
What's built on it
BNB Chain hosts a large DeFi ecosystem (PancakeSwap is its flagship DEX), plus gaming, NFTs, and a long tail of retail-oriented projects. The culture is fast-moving and retail-heavy, with lots of new token launches — which brings energy but also a higher density of low-quality and risky projects than more curated ecosystems.
The centralisation question
The trade-off for BNB Chain's convenience is decentralisation. It runs with a relatively small set of validators and is closely associated with a single company, Binance. That makes it fast and cheap but less decentralised than Ethereum, and more exposed to decisions and fortunes of its parent exchange — a consideration given the regulatory scrutiny Binance has faced globally.
Strengths and who it's for
BNB Chain's strengths are low fees, deep liquidity, and seamless access for the huge Binance user base. It suits active retail users who value cheap, familiar DeFi. The counterpoints are greater centralisation, close ties to one company, and a riskier project landscape that rewards caution. Indian users should also note the usual VDA tax treatment applies to all activity here.
