The shared-security model

Polkadot's central idea is a "relay chain" that provides security to a set of connected chains called parachains. Instead of each chain recruiting its own validators and bootstrapping its own security (the hard part of launching a blockchain), parachains plug into Polkadot and inherit the relay chain's security collectively. It's a pooled-security approach to the multi-chain future.

Polkadot vs Cosmos

Polkadot and Cosmos are often compared because both envision many specialised chains. The key difference is security: Cosmos chains are fully sovereign and secure themselves (more independence, more responsibility), while Polkadot parachains share the relay chain's security (less to bootstrap, but more tied to the central system). Two philosophies aiming at the same multi-chain goal from opposite directions.

What's built on it

Polkadot's ecosystem consists of parachains specialising in DeFi, smart contracts, identity, and more, plus Kusama — a fast-moving "canary network" used to test things before they reach Polkadot. The ecosystem emphasises robust engineering and on-chain governance, with token holders actively steering the network's upgrades.

Strengths and trade-offs

Polkadot's strengths are shared security (a big help for new chains), strong interoperability between parachains, and sophisticated on-chain governance. The trade-offs are complexity — the model and the process for securing a parachain slot are intricate — and competition from both Ethereum's L2 ecosystem and the Cosmos approach. It's an ambitious, engineering-led ecosystem.
