Brazil's electricity — one of the world's cleanest large grids

Brazil gets 88% of its electricity from renewables — mostly large hydropower dams, complemented by growing wind and solar. This gives Brazil one of the cleanest electricity systems of any large economy, with lifecycle emissions approximately 100 g CO₂/kWh compared to the global average of approximately 460 g CO₂/kWh.

Hydropower dominance and its limits:
Brazil's approximately 100 GW of hydro capacity (approximately 220 large plants across the Amazon, Paraná, and São Francisco basins) has historically provided firm, dispatchable, cheap electricity. Itaipu (25.41°S 54.59°W, 14,000 MW — dedicated deep-dive page) alone provides approximately 15% of Brazil's electricity. Tucuruí (3.83°S 49.62°W, 8,370 MW) on the Amazon tributary Tocantins. Belo Monte (3.11°S 51.78°W, 11,233 MW, Xingu River) — the world's 4th largest dam, controversial for its impact on the Kayapó indigenous people and Amazon ecosystem. The limitation: approximately 70% of Brazil's hydro capacity is in the Amazon basin, which is increasingly affected by droughts. Climate change is making El Niño droughts more severe and frequent — the 2021 drought caused hydro reservoirs to fall to 20% capacity, triggering electricity rationing and emergency gas and coal burning. Northeast Brazil wind — the world's best onshore wind resource:
The coast of Northeast Brazil (Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí, Bahia) has some of the world's highest onshore wind capacity factors — typically 40–55% vs the global average of 25–35%. The northeast's trade winds blow consistently and strongly year-round. Brazil has approximately 25 GW of installed wind (2024), almost entirely in the northeast. Key wind hubs: Parnaíba (2.91°S 41.77°W, numerous wind farms), Osório (29.89°S 50.28°W, 150 MW — Brazil's first large wind farm, 2006). Brazil's wind auctions in 2022–2023 achieved prices below $20/MWh — among the world's lowest for onshore wind, driven by the exceptional resource. Petrobras and the pre-salt revolution

The pre-salt geology:
Brazil's pre-salt oil fields are located in the Santos Basin, approximately 200–300 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, under approximately 2,100 metres of water, 1,000 metres of post-salt sediment, and then a layer of rock salt (1,000–2,000 metres thick) before reaching the oil reservoir approximately 5,000 metres below sea level. The salt layer acts as a near-perfect seal — trapping light, high-quality crude for millions of years. Petrobras discovered the Lula/Tupi field (23.55°S 41.42°W) in 2006 — the largest oil discovery in the Western Hemisphere in 30 years, estimated 5–8 billion barrels. Since then, the Buzios (23.15°S 41.22°W) field has emerged as even larger — Petrobras's target of 600,000–800,000 bbl/day from Buzios alone would make it one of the world's largest single producing fields. All pre-salt production uses FPSOs (Floating Production Storage Offloading vessels) — the water depth makes fixed platforms impractical. Questions about Brazil's energy

Brazil's clean electricity and oil expansion coexist because electricity and oil serve different end uses. Brazil's 88% clean electricity is remarkable — but electricity is only approximately 18% of Brazil's total final energy consumption. The rest includes: transport fuel (approximately 33% — cars, trucks, aviation, shipping), industrial heat (approximately 30%), and other uses. Brazil's cars use a mix of ethanol (from sugarcane, which is relatively low-carbon) and petrol from refineries. But aviation, long-distance trucking, and international shipping all still require fossil fuels. More fundamentally: Brazil's pre-salt oil is low-cost to produce (~$6–10/bbl Petrobras extraction cost) and high-quality (light, sweet crude). Even in an IEA NZE 2050 scenario, some oil demand continues to 2050 — and the logic is that this residual demand should be met from the world's cheapest, lowest-carbon-intensity barrels, not from expensive, carbon-intensive sources like oil sands or shale. Brazil's pre-salt meets this criterion. Petrobras also generates revenues that fund national development. Brazil's Lula government (from 2023) has positioned Brazil as a country that can both fight deforestation (reducing carbon emissions) and responsibly extract pre-salt oil — arguing these are compatible if the proceeds are reinvested in green transition. Critics, including some climate economists, argue that any new oil production is incompatible with Paris Agreement goals.
