Barossa Valley
The home of old vine Shiraz. Vines brought from Europe in the 1840s that survived phylloxera. A warm valley that makes Australia's most powerful and age-worthy reds.
The Barossa Valley is a Geographical Indication (GI) designated wine region in South Australia, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Adelaide, under the Australian GI system administered by Wine Australia (formerly the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) under the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Act 1980 (now the Wine Australia Act 2013). The Barossa Valley GI covers approximately 14,000 hectares of planted vineyards in the Barossa Valley floor (at approximately 250–300 metres altitude, warm and dry) and is distinct from — but part of the broader Barossa Zone with — the Eden Valley GI (at approximately 400–600 metres altitude, cooler). Shiraz is the dominant red variety (~55% of Barossa Valley plantings), followed by Grenache and Mataro (Mourvèdre). The Barossa Valley is globally recognised for its old vine Shiraz — some vines are documented to be over 150 years old, pre-dating the phylloxera epidemic that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century (phylloxera has never reached the Barossa, allowing ungrafted own-rooted vines to survive to exceptional age). The defining wine of the region is Penfolds Grange — produced since 1951 and considered Australia's most collectable wine.
Why Barossa's old vines are exceptional
Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) is a root louse that devastated European vineyards from the 1860s onwards — destroying hundreds of thousands of hectares of old European vines and forcing replanting onto phylloxera-resistant American rootstock. Most of Europe's vineyards today grow European Vitis vinifera varieties grafted onto American rootstocks.
Phylloxera has never reached the Barossa Valley. The region was geographically isolated from phylloxera-affected areas, and strict quarantine measures maintained by South Australia have kept the pest out to the present day. This means Barossa vines grow on their own roots — ungrafted — as their original European counterparts did. German and Silesian settlers brought the first Shiraz cuttings in the 1840s; some of these vines, or their direct clonal descendants, are still producing fruit over 150 years later.
Old vines produce less fruit — their productive capacity decreases as they age — but the fruit they do produce is more concentrated. Very old Barossa Shiraz vines, grown in dry, sandy loam soils, may produce as little as 500g–1.5kg of fruit per vine (compared to 3–5kg for a young vine). This extreme concentration produces intensely flavoured, deeply coloured wine — the characteristic "liquid jewel" style of top Barossa old-vine Shiraz.
Penfolds Grange — the wine that defined Australian fine wine
Penfolds Grange is a Shiraz-dominant wine (with typically a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon) produced by Penfolds, aged in new American oak hogsheads. It was first produced in 1951 by Max Schubert, Penfolds' chief winemaker at the time, inspired by his visit to Bordeaux. Schubert's aim was to produce an Australian red wine with the complexity and longevity of a Bordeaux first growth. The wine was initially rejected by Penfolds management as too austere and oak-dominated — Schubert reportedly continued production in secret for several years before the wine's quality was recognised.
Penfolds Grange was declared a Heritage Icon by the South Australian government in 2001. Each vintage is released after approximately 7–8 years of winery ageing (combination of barrel and bottle) and is capable of further development for 30–50+ years from vintage. It is the most collected and most valuable Australian wine at auction. Grange is a multi-regional wine — Penfolds sources grapes from Barossa Valley and other South Australian regions to produce each vintage's blend.
The Australian GI system — how it works
Australia's wine geographic designation system operates under the GI (Geographical Indication) framework established by Wine Australia. It defines geographic boundaries at three hierarchical levels: Zone (the largest unit — e.g. Barossa Zone); Region (within a Zone — e.g. Barossa Valley, Eden Valley); and Sub-region (within a Region — e.g. Marananga, Greenock within Barossa Valley).
The Australian GI system, like the US AVA system, is primarily geographic — it does not mandate specific varieties, production methods, yields, or alcohol levels. A wine labelled with a GI must contain at least 85% grapes from that geographic area (the same 85% rule as US AVAs). The key difference from European appellations: Australian GI labelling does not carry any implication about quality tier or production standard beyond geographic origin.
Wine Australia maintains the GI register and approves all new GI applications based on criteria of distinguishing natural features (climate, geology, topography) and viticultural history.

Old vine Shiraz chemistry — what age and own-rooting contribute
The specific chemistry that distinguishes very old vine Barossa Shiraz from young vine Shiraz involves several documented mechanisms. The primary effect of vine age on wine quality is indirect — through the vine's reduced productive capacity — rather than through any unique chemistry of the old vine per se.
As a vine ages, the ratio of vegetative growth (leaf canopy) to fruit production decreases. Old vines allocate a higher proportion of photosynthate to the root system (which is enormous in a 100+ year old vine) than to fruit. This reduces the number of clusters and berry size, concentrating sugars, acids, and flavour precursors in each berry. The resulting wine has a higher skin-to-juice ratio (more tannin and colour per litre), higher natural sugar (higher potential alcohol), and more concentrated aromatic compounds.
Own-rooted vines — growing on their own root system rather than grafted American rootstock — may also have a slightly different mineral uptake from the soil, but the scientific evidence for a direct flavour contribution from own-rooting (as opposed to simple vine age and the dry-farmed/low-yield conditions typically associated with old own-rooted vines) is not well-established. The Barossa's success is more attributable to the combination of age, dry-farming, sandy loam soils, and warm climate than to own-rooting specifically.
Rotundone — the sesquiterpene that produces black pepper character in Shiraz — is present at higher concentrations in cooler-grown Barossa Shiraz (particularly from elevated sites in the Eden Valley and cooler Barossa sub-regions) than in warmer valley floor sites. Hot Barossa floor Shiraz tends more toward plum, dark chocolate, and dried herb than black pepper — consistent with the documented UV degradation of rotundone at higher temperatures.
