Piedmont
Italy's most Burgundian region. One grape — Nebbiolo — makes two wines that divide the world's most serious collectors. And everywhere else, Barbera keeps the locals happy.
Piedmont (Piemonte) is a wine region in northwestern Italy, in the Piedmont administrative region, producing approximately 340,000 hectolitres of DOC/DOCG wine annually. The region contains 17 DOCG designations and 42 DOC designations — the highest concentration of protected wine designations of any Italian region. The two flagship DOCGs are Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, both produced entirely from the Nebbiolo grape in delimited zones of the Langhe hills south of Alba. Under Italian wine law (Ministerial Decree implementing EU Regulation 1308/2013), DOCG is the highest tier of Italian wine classification — requiring additional production restrictions beyond DOC standards. The governing authority for Italian wine designations is the Ministero delle Politiche Agricole Alimentari e Forestali (MIPAAF).
Nebbiolo — the grape that defines a region
Nebbiolo is one of the most demanding red wine grapes on earth. It ripens extremely late — in the Langhe hills, harvest typically occurs in October after most other varieties have been picked for weeks. It requires specific clay-limestone soils in specific aspects with enough accumulated heat to ripen its thick skins and naturally high acid and tannin levels. It is extraordinarily sensitive to site — the same variety produces wines of completely different character depending on the precise slope, aspect, and soil composition of the vineyard. And it is produced only in significant quality in a small number of areas in northwestern Italy — primarily the Langhe, Gattinara/Ghemme in the Novara hills, and Valtellina in Lombardy.
The resulting wines — Barolo and Barbaresco — are pale in colour (Nebbiolo's anthocyanins degrade rapidly with age, producing a distinctive orange-brick rim visible in wines as young as 5 years), intensely perfumed with rose petal, tar, licorice, and dried herbs, and formidably tannic when young. They are commonly described as requiring 10+ years from vintage to begin showing their full character, and the best examples continue developing for 30–50+ years.
Barolo vs Barbaresco — the key differences
Both Barolo and Barbaresco are 100% Nebbiolo wines from adjacent but non-overlapping delimited zones south of Alba. The differences are regulatory, geographic, and stylistic:
Barolo covers approximately 1,800 hectares in 11 communes (most important: La Morra, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba). The disciplinare requires minimum 38 months total ageing, of which 18 months must be in oak. For Riserva, minimum 62 months total. Alcohol minimum: 13%. Barolo wines from Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto tend toward more structured, austere, tannic styles; La Morra and Barolo commune produce softer, more floral styles. These differences reflect underlying soil variation — Helvetian sandstone (harder, more austere) vs Tortonian clay-limestone (softer, more perfumed).
Barbaresco covers approximately 700 hectares in 4 communes (Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso, San Rocco Seno d'Elvio). Minimum 26 months total ageing, of which 9 months in oak. For Riserva, minimum 50 months. Alcohol minimum: 12.5%. Barbaresco is generally described as more elegant, more perfumed, and more approachable younger than Barolo — though the finest expressions rival Barolo in power and longevity. The differences are partly regulatory (less mandatory ageing) and partly geographic (slightly different soil and microclimate).
The other essential Piedmont wines
Barbera d'Asti DOCG and Barbera d'Alba DOC — Barbera is the most widely planted variety in Piedmont and produces wines with deep colour, high acidity, and low tannins — the opposite of Nebbiolo in structural profile. It is refreshingly drinkable young, increasingly produced in premium versions with oak ageing that rival the seriousness of Barolo.
Gavi DOCG (Gavi di Gavi, or Cortese di Gavi) — produced from Cortese, a white variety, in the southeastern corner of Piedmont near Genoa. Crisp, mineral, refreshing white wine — historically important as Piedmont's prestige white. Minimum alcohol 10.5%.
Moscato d'Asti DOCG — delicately sweet, low-alcohol (typically 5–5.5% ABV), lightly sparkling (frizzante) white from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains (Moscato Bianco). The tank-fermentation method (Charmat) produces the bubbles. One of Italy's most commercially successful exports.
Dolcetto d'Alba DOC — dark-coloured, low-acid, soft-tannin red. Historically the everyday red of the Langhe — drunk young, paired with antipasti. Unlike Nebbiolo's structural complexity, Dolcetto's appeal is in freshness and approachability.

The Langhe soil types — why Serralunga tastes different from La Morra
The Barolo production zone sits on two geologically distinct soil formations from different epochs of the Miocene:
Helvetian soils (also called Lamagna soils) — older, harder, more compact. Higher clay content. Less fertile. Found primarily in Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Monforte d'Alba. These soils produce wines described as more powerful, tannic, structured, and slower-developing — the classic "traditional" Barolo style. The restricted root development in harder soils concentrates the vine's energy.
Tortonian soils — younger, softer, more friable. Higher calcium-magnesium content. More fertile. Found primarily in La Morra and Barolo commune. These soils produce wines described as more perfumed, rounder, more accessible younger — the "modern" (or in Italian terms, more elegant) Barolo style. The greater fertility and softer texture allows more active vine growth and different mineral uptake.
The tannin structure difference between Helvetian and Tortonian Barolo is measurable: proanthocyanidin concentration and degree of polymerisation are higher in Serralunga wines than La Morra wines from comparable vintage years — documented in peer-reviewed Italian enology research.
Nebbiolo's biochemistry — why it produces its distinctive character
Nebbiolo's distinctive sensory profile — rose petal perfume, tar, licorice, and tobacco — is the product of three documented chemical mechanisms.
1. Geraniol and linalool — the rose petal character
The rose petal aroma characteristic of Nebbiolo is primarily attributable to geraniol (a monoterpene alcohol also found in rose and geranium essential oils) and its related compounds. Nebbiolo accumulates geraniol at concentrations significantly above the detection threshold (~6 μg/L in wine) during skin contact and fermentation. The geraniol content varies with vineyard site, vintage temperature, and fermentation conditions. Geraniol is also a precursor to citronellol — formed during fermentation — which adds a more citrus-floral note to the rose petal character. Source: Versini et al. 2. Guaiacol and related phenols — tar and tobacco
The tar and tobacco character of aged Barolo comes from phenolic compounds, particularly guaiacol and 4-methylguaiacol (the same compounds that produce peat/smoke character in Scotch whisky), formed during oak ageing by thermal degradation of lignin in the oak stave. Extended ageing in large oak botti (traditional Barolo practice) allows gradual extraction of these compounds without the vanilla dominance associated with new French barrique — producing the characteristic aged Barolo "tar and roses" profile. The tar character is also influenced by indole and skatole — nitrogen-containing compounds formed from tryptophan degradation.
3. Tannin structure — polymerised proanthocyanidins
Nebbiolo has among the highest tannin concentrations of any commercially planted red wine grape. The tannins are predominantly composed of condensed proanthocyanidins (specifically procyanidins and prodelphinidins) with a high degree of polymerisation. The high polymerisation produces tannins that are perceived as coarse and drying in young wines — the characteristic "biting" Barolo tannin experienced in wines under 8–10 years. With age and oxygen exposure (through the barrel stave and cork), tannins undergo further polymerisation and precipitation — producing the silky, fine texture characteristic of well-aged Barolo. The same chemical process is why decanting young Barolo (with vigorous aeration) can temporarily soften perceived tannin.
