Definition
Preparations involving Parada (mercury) typically combined with Gandhaka (sulphur), base metals, or mineral compounds. Base preparation: Kajjali — mercury(II) sulphide (HgS) produced by triturating purified mercury with sulphur until the Rekhapurna test is passed. Further processing produces specific Rasa preparations.

Why mercury — the classical rationale

Rasa Shastra texts: "Parada is the only substance that, when properly purified and processed, can penetrate all 14 types of channels (Srotamsi) simultaneously." The Sarvasrotogami designation — entering all channels — is the highest penetration classification in classical pharmacology, assigned exclusively to properly processed Parada-based preparations.

The classical system distinguishes sharply between raw mercury (toxic) and classically processed mercury compounds (therapeutic). Raw elemental mercury and inorganic mercury salts are explicitly documented as toxic in classical texts — the mandatory Shodhana process exists precisely because of this toxicity. Properly processed mercury sulphide (HgS) presents a different chemical species with documented different bioavailability and safety profile.

Modern regulatory context — critical
Mercury-containing Ayurvedic preparations are regulated under Drugs and Cosmetics Act Schedule T in India, requiring GMP compliance and quality testing. WHO and several national regulatory authorities outside India have documented concerns about heavy metal content in some commercial products. Classical safety claims require: complete Shodhana and Marana by trained practitioners; quality testing by licensed manufacturers; prescription by BAMS/MD Ayurveda trained in Rasa Shastra. These preparations should not be purchased from unlicensed sources or self-administered. Outside India, check local regulatory status before use.

Kajjali — the foundation

The base of most Rasa Shastra preparations is Kajjali — mercury(II) sulphide (HgS) produced by triturating purified mercury with sulphur in equal parts until the Rekhapurna test is passed. Kajjali has documented lower bioavailability of ionic mercury than elemental Hg or inorganic mercury salts.

Parada Shodhana — the 18-stage mercury purification process documented in Rasa Ratna Samucchaya — precedes all Kajjali preparation. The Shodhana converts elemental mercury to a state that will form stable compounds during subsequent Marana cycles. Each Rasa preparation specifies the complete synthesis protocol including the number and type of Puta, specific Bhavana dravya, and classical quality tests.

Prescription — Rasa Shastra-trained practitioner required

Indicated for conditions where classical texts document Rasa preparations as superior to plant preparations — typically advanced chronic conditions, severe Dosha vitiation, and conditions not responding to plant preparations. Classical conditions: Rajayakshma (wasting conditions), advanced Prameha, Unmada (severe mental disorders).

Classical documentation: "Rasaushadhis without the guidance of a qualified Rasa Vaidya are like poison." Prescription requires BAMS or MD Ayurveda with specific Rasa Shastra training. Self-administration is not recommended under any circumstances.
