When you swap one for another, you expect to get almost exactly the same amount back, because they have the same target value. A general-purpose exchange, using a formula designed for volatile pairs, would give you a worse rate and more slippage than necessary for these same-value swaps.

Curve was built specifically for this case. It uses a special mathematical formula optimised for assets that should trade near a 1:1 ratio, allowing it to offer swaps between stablecoins (and other similar-valued assets) with remarkably low slippage and tiny fees. The CRV token and the vote-escrow innovation

CRV is Curve's token, and it became famous for pioneering a hugely influential mechanism called "vote-escrow." The idea: rather than simply holding CRV, users can lock it up for a period of time — up to several years — and in return receive "veCRV" (vote-escrowed CRV). The longer you lock, the more veCRV you get. This veCRV gives you three things: voting power over the protocol, a share of the fees Curve generates, and the ability to direct CRV reward incentives toward particular pools. By rewarding long-term commitment over short-term holding, this model aligned token holders with the protocol's long-term health and reduced selling pressure.
