Nothing here is financial advice. FTM has migrated to S (Sonic); values can fall to zero. Always do your own research.

One sentence

Fantom was a high-speed Layer-1 blockchain (launched December 2019) famous for its aBFT 'Lachesis' consensus, its Andre Cronje-fuelled 2021 DeFi boom, and its painful 2023 — before the team relaunched the whole project as Sonic in late 2024, converting FTM to the new S token 1:1.

What was Fantom's pitch?

Speed and cost. Fantom's Opera mainnet (Dec 2019) used a DAG-based consensus called Lachesis to finalise transactions in about a second for fractions of a cent, while staying compatible with Ethereum's tooling (EVM). In the 2021 'alt-L1' race — Solana, Avalanche, Fantom — it was the scrappy, developer-friendly option.

Its boom was inseparable from DeFi architect Andre Cronje, whose projects and presence pulled billions in liquidity to Fantom; TVL peaked near $8B in early 2022. When Cronje announced he was stepping away from DeFi in March 2022, Fantom's ecosystem took a confidence hit it never fully recovered from in that era.

What happened in 2023?

The Multichain bridge — Fantom's main connection to other chains — collapsed in mid-2023 after its CEO was arrested in China, stranding and effectively destroying well over $100M of bridged assets that Fantom's ecosystem depended on. It was one of crypto's clearest lessons that a chain is only as safe as its bridges.

Is FTM legal in India?

Yes. FTM/S qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies — including on the FTM→S migration if it created a taxable event for you; consult a tax professional.

🟡 A bit more detail

For when you want to go a little deeper.

The Sonic relaunch — where FTM went

Rather than patch the old chain, the Fantom Foundation rebuilt: it became Sonic Labs and launched the Sonic network in December 2024 — a much faster EVM chain (10,000+ TPS claims, sub-second finality) with a native bridge to Ethereum and a 'Fee Monetization' model that shares gas revenue with app developers. FTM converted 1:1 into the new S token.

So today, 'Fantom' is a historical name: the technology, team, and token all live on as Sonic. If you held FTM, you hold S. This page stays as the history; the living page is Sonic.

Legacy-chain risk pattern

Fantom's arc — boom on one star builder, bust on one bridge failure, rebirth under a new name — is a compact lesson in Layer-1 risk: ecosystems concentrated on single points of failure (a person, a bridge) inherit those failure modes. Evaluate Sonic on its own fundamentals, not 2021 nostalgia. Live data: CoinGecko
