What is Farcaster?

π’ The simple version
Plain English β no jargon. Start here.
Farcaster is a decentralised social protocol where your identity, followers, and posts belong to you β stored on-chain so no single company can ban you or delete your content, while client apps like Warpcast (its Twitter-like interface) compete to offer the best experience on top of the shared open data.
The problem with Twitter/X and centralised social
On Twitter, your followers, DMs, and posting history are owned by Twitter. If you're banned, you lose everything. If Twitter changes its algorithm, your reach changes overnight. If Twitter closes, your social graph disappears. Farcaster's answer: store the social graph on Ethereum and Optimism instead. Your account is a wallet address β nobody can take it from you. Your posts (called "casts") are stored in a decentralised hub network. Any app can read and display your content.
This is the "sufficiently decentralised" social protocol idea: the underlying data layer is open, censorship-resistant, and owned by users. The interface layer (Warpcast, etc.) competes on product quality rather than data lock-in.
Frames β the breakout feature
Farcaster's biggest innovation is Frames: interactive mini-apps embedded directly inside social posts. A Frame can be a poll, a game, a token mint, an NFT claim, or a DeFi action β all without leaving the feed. Frames turned Farcaster from a niche crypto Twitter clone into an interactive onchain app platform. The 2024 viral spread of Frames significantly grew Farcaster's daily active users.
Is Farcaster relevant for Indian users?
Yes β Farcaster is used globally by crypto builders and enthusiasts. Account registration requires a small ETH fee on Optimism (under $1 typically). No dedicated FARCASTER token exists for trading, but the ecosystem includes tokens like DEGEN (a community tipping token) that qualify as VDAs under Indian law.

For when you want to go a little deeper.
How Farcaster's architecture works
Farcaster has two layers. The identity layer lives on-chain: your Farcaster ID (FID) is an NFT on Optimism, and your profile information is an on-chain record. This is permanent and censorship-resistant. The content layer is off-chain: your casts (posts), reactions, and follows are stored in "Hubs" β a network of servers anyone can run. Hubs sync with each other via a gossip protocol. This makes content storage cheap and fast while keeping identity ownership on-chain.
The trade-off: Hubs can technically remove content (unlike a fully on-chain system). Farcaster's "sufficient decentralisation" argument is that the identity and social graph is on-chain enough to prevent platform lock-in, even if content moderation remains possible at the Hub level.
Farcaster has no governance token β it's a protocol run by Merkle Manufactory (the company founded by Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan). Revenue comes from account registration fees. Ecosystem tokens like DEGEN are community-created, not official Farcaster assets. If you're looking to invest in "Farcaster," there is no tradeable FARCASTER token. Live info: farcaster.xyz
Warpcast vs Farcaster: the distinction
Farcaster is the protocol (the open standard). Warpcast is a client app built on Farcaster β the most popular one, made by the Farcaster team. This is like the relationship between email (protocol) and Gmail (client). Warpcast is currently dominant, but other clients exist: Supercast, Nook, and others. Because the data is open, any developer can build a new Farcaster client that accesses the same social graph.

Key facts
- Type: Decentralised social protocol (not primarily a token)
- Company: Merkle Manufactory (Dan Romero, Varun Srinivasan)
- Identity layer: On-chain FID (NFT on Optimism)
- Content layer: Off-chain Hubs (P2P gossip network)
- Main client: Warpcast (Twitter-like feed)
- Frames: Interactive mini-apps embedded in posts (2024 breakout feature)
- Native token: None β no FARCASTER token exists
- Ecosystem tokens: DEGEN (community tipping), MOXIE (creator rewards), others
- Chain: Optimism (identity), Hub network (content)
- vs Lens Protocol: Farcaster more EVM-agnostic; Lens Protocol on Polygon/zkSync
Channels and the onchain content economy
Farcaster channels (like /degen, /base, /ethereum) are community spaces within the protocol. Channel hosts can set moderation rules. The DEGEN token β started as a community tipping currency in the /degen channel β became a significant ecosystem token with its own chain (Degen L3 on Base). This organic token emergence from a social protocol is a novel crypto phenomenon: a meme community tipping currency evolving into a full L3 chain. It illustrates how Farcaster's open protocol enables ecosystem experiments that wouldn't be possible on centralised social platforms.
