Grass is a DePIN protocol where you install a browser extension or app, share your idle internet bandwidth with the Grass network, and earn GRASS tokens — the network uses your bandwidth to scrape publicly accessible websites at scale, creating structured datasets that AI companies pay for, and a share of that revenue flows back to bandwidth contributors.
Why do AI companies pay for web scraped data?
Large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude are trained on massive datasets of internet text. The web contains essentially all of human written knowledge — news articles, academic papers, Reddit discussions, Wikipedia, code repositories, books, and billions of other documents. Scraping this data at scale requires enormous bandwidth and infrastructure. AI companies either do this themselves (expensively) or buy datasets from data providers.
Grass proposes a decentralised scraping network. Instead of one company's data centre sending requests from a small number of IP addresses (easily blocked by websites), Grass distributes the scraping across millions of residential IP addresses (yours). Each request looks like a regular user browsing the web from a home connection. The result: websites are much harder to block, scraping succeeds at higher rates, and the costs are distributed across participants who earn GRASS tokens for their contribution.
How Grass earns you tokens
Install the Grass extension (Chrome/Brave/Firefox) or desktop app. Leave it running in the background. Grass uses your bandwidth when you're not using it — typical usage is very low (comparable to a YouTube video playing in the background). You accumulate Grass Points that convert to GRASS tokens. The GRASS Season 1 airdrop distributed tokens to early participants in October 2024; Season 2 and ongoing rewards continue distributing GRASS to active contributors.
Is GRASS legal in India?

Grass on Solana
Grass is built on Solana — all GRASS token transactions, rewards distribution, and governance occur on Solana. The choice of Solana (fast, low fees) makes sense for a protocol distributing small micropayments to potentially millions of contributors. Ethereum gas fees would make micro-rewards economically unviable; Solana's sub-cent fees allow even small bandwidth contributions to be rewarded meaningfully.
Grass Layer 2 (GL2) is Grass's custom data verification layer: when scraped data comes in from contributors' bandwidth, GL2 validators verify the data quality and authenticity before it enters the final dataset sold to AI companies. This prevents contributors from submitting fake or low-quality data for GRASS rewards. The verification system is critical for maintaining data quality that AI companies will actually pay for.
Sharing your bandwidth means Grass network traffic routes through your internet connection and IP address. The websites being scraped see your IP as the requester. This creates reputational risk (your IP could be flagged by websites), potential ToS violations with your ISP, and privacy questions about what data is being accessed through your connection.
