Trying to match centralised exchange speed
Big centralised exchanges are fast because everything happens on their own private servers. HyperEVM: turning an exchange into a platform
Hyperliquid did not stop at being an exchange. It launched HyperEVM, an Ethereum-compatible smart contract environment running alongside its core order-book engine on the same Layer 1. This is a significant architectural move: developers can deploy ordinary Ethereum-style smart contracts that interact natively with Hyperliquid's order book and perpetuals engine, without bridges or external oracles. A lending protocol on HyperEVM can use Hyperliquid prices directly; a structured-product vault can open and close perpetual positions programmatically; a new token can launch and immediately have a liquid market.
This transforms Hyperliquid from a single application into a financial platform. HYPE is the gas token of HyperEVM, so every transaction in this growing ecosystem creates demand for HYPE beyond pure speculation — a real, usage-driven sink that ties the token's value to the activity built on top of the chain.
How Hyperliquid compares to its rivals
Against dYdX, Hyperliquid generally wins on speed and user experience while dYdX leans more decentralised in its validator set. Against GMX, the models differ fundamentally: GMX uses a shared liquidity pool (traders trade against a pool of assets), whereas Hyperliquid runs a true order book (traders trade against each other's orders), which professional traders tend to prefer for tighter spreads and more control. Against Drift on Solana, Hyperliquid's dedicated chain gives it more consistent performance. The cumulative effect is that, for traders who want centralised-exchange-quality perps with self-custody, Hyperliquid became the clear category leader through 2024 and 2025.
Hyperliquid's blistering performance comes at a cost: its Layer 1 is validated by a relatively small set of validators, initially in the low tens, with significant influence held by the founding team. This is materially more centralised than Ethereum or Solana, and it is a deliberate engineering trade-off — extreme performance requires tight coordination that a huge validator set makes difficult. The HLP vault and how Hyperliquid makes markets
A key piece of Hyperliquid's machinery is the Hyperliquidity Provider vault (HLP) — a community-owned market-making and liquidation vault that ordinary users can deposit into. HLP provides liquidity to the order book and absorbs liquidations, and depositors share in the profits (and losses) of this activity. It democratises a role — market making and liquidation — that on centralised exchanges is captured entirely by the exchange and privileged firms. It also means that some of the value Hyperliquid generates flows back to its community rather than to a corporate parent, reinforcing the "by the community" ethos.

HyperBFT: the consensus that makes it fast
Hyperliquid's speed comes from a custom consensus mechanism the team calls HyperBFT, a high-performance Byzantine Fault Tolerant protocol inspired by the latest research in the Hotstuff family of consensus algorithms. The design goal is single-digit-millisecond response and very high throughput so that the on-chain order book can match orders at a pace approaching dedicated trading systems. The chain processes order placements, cancellations, fills, and liquidations as native operations rather than as generic smart-contract calls, which is a large part of why it dramatically outperforms order books built as smart contracts on general-purpose chains.
This "native order book" design is the crux of Hyperliquid's technical bet. On a general-purpose chain, every order is an expensive transaction competing for block space with everything else. On Hyperliquid, the order book is the chain's core state machine, optimised end to end. The cost is generality — the base layer does fewer things — but HyperEVM adds the general-purpose programmability back on top, giving the system both a specialised fast core and a flexible application layer.
The March 2025 stress test
In March 2025 Hyperliquid faced a genuine crisis that tested its design under fire. A large trader (a "whale") took an enormous, highly-leveraged position and manipulated conditions in a way that pushed losses onto the HLP vault when the position was liquidated. The episode forced Hyperliquid to adjust risk parameters and margin requirements, and it exposed real vulnerabilities in how large positions and liquidations interact with the community vault. The protocol survived and adapted, which built confidence — but the incident was a sober reminder that on-chain derivatives at scale face adversarial actors probing every edge of the system, and that the HLP vault concentrates real, sometimes large, risk on its depositors.
Token economics and value accrual
HYPE accrues value through several channels. It is the gas token of HyperEVM, so ecosystem activity drives demand. A portion of the protocol's trading-fee revenue is used to buy back HYPE, directly linking exchange volume to token demand — an unusually clean value-accrual mechanism compared to many tokens whose link to protocol revenue is vague. With roughly a third of supply allocated to the community and ongoing emissions earmarked for future distribution, the tokenomics are deliberately community-weighted. The central question for HYPE's long-term value is whether trading volume and HyperEVM activity keep growing fast enough to sustain the buyback-driven demand against future token unlocks.
Spot trading, launches, and the broader ecosystem
Beyond perpetuals, Hyperliquid supports spot trading and has introduced mechanisms for launching new tokens directly on its platform, complete with immediate order-book liquidity. This positions Hyperliquid not just as a derivatives venue but as a full trading and launch ecosystem — a place where a token can be born, find a market, and trade with deep liquidity, all on one fast self-custodial chain. The growth of projects building on HyperEVM — lending markets, yield vaults, structured products — will determine whether Hyperliquid becomes a true financial hub or remains primarily a (very successful) perps exchange.
Honest assessment of the risks
Hyperliquid is one of the genuine success stories of its cycle, with real users, real volume, and a real product that solves a real problem. The risks are equally real. The validator set is small and the team's influence large, so the "decentralised" label deserves an asterisk until progressive decentralisation actually happens. The HLP vault concentrates risk on depositors, as March 2025 showed. And as the dominant on-chain perps venue, Hyperliquid is an attractive target for both sophisticated market manipulation and regulatory scrutiny of crypto derivatives. It has navigated these challenges impressively so far, but none of them have gone away.
