Kava's dual co-chain model
Most L1s pick one execution environment: Cosmos chains run CosmWasm, EVM chains run Solidity. Kava runs both simultaneously. The Kava Cosmos Co-Chain handles: IBC connections (access to the full Cosmos ecosystem), KAVA staking and governance, and native Cosmos apps. The Kava EVM Co-Chain handles: Solidity smart contracts, MetaMask compatibility, and Ethereum-native applications. A "translator module" bridges assets and messages between the two co-chains atomically — you can use an EVM DeFi app that calls a Cosmos module in the same transaction.
This architecture lets Kava attract two developer audiences: Cosmos developers who want EVM users' liquidity, and Ethereum developers who want Cosmos IBC connectivity. In practice, Kava was one of the first Cosmos chains to offer full EVM compatibility before other Cosmos chains adopted the approach.

Translator module mechanics
The Kava translator module is the bridge between the two co-chains. It maps EVM addresses to Cosmos addresses (the same private key works on both, but the address format differs).
