One sentence

Saddle Finance was a Curve Finance competitor (stable asset AMM) launched January 2021 that wound down primary operations in 2023-2024, documenting the difficulty of competing against Curve's entrenched veCRV flywheel even with a technically sound product.

What happened to Saddle

Saddle used the same StableSwap invariant as Curve for low-slippage stable asset swaps (USDC/USDT/DAI, WBTC/renBTC/sBTC/tBTC, stETH variants). Good technology. But Curve's veCRV flywheel (lock CRV β†’ veCRV β†’ direct emissions to pools β†’ attract LPs β†’ attract volume β†’ more fees β†’ more CRV demand) created a self-reinforcing moat. Saddle couldn't compete with SDL emissions that lacked CRV's demand dynamics. By 2023-24, Saddle wound down. SDL is largely inactive. Historical lesson: in DeFi, flywheel economies of scale can defeat technically superior competitors. Is SDL legal in India? Yes. 30% tax, 1% TDS apply on any gains.

Historical significance

Saddle is documented here for historical completeness. Its story is instructive for evaluating any DeFi protocol competing with an entrenched market leader: technical merit must compete against network effects + incentive flywheels. Curve survived all challenges partly because its veCRV system created long-term LTV alignment.
