What is Shiba Inu?

MemecoinEcosystem
Last verified: April 2026
This page documents what Shiba Inu is and how it works — based on the Shiba Inu ecosystem documentation and on-chain data. Nothing here is financial advice. Memecoins are highly speculative. Always do your own research.
One sentence that captures it

Shiba Inu started as a Dogecoin competitor and "Dogecoin killer" memecoin in 2020, but has since built an entire ecosystem — ShibaSwap DEX, Shibarium Layer 2, and multiple tokens — making it the most developed memecoin project in existence.

How SHIB differs from DOGE

Dogecoin is a standalone blockchain. Shiba Inu is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum — meaning it uses Ethereum's security and infrastructure rather than its own chain. When Shiba Inu launched in August 2020, this was presented as a feature: the entire Ethereum DeFi ecosystem was immediately accessible, no new chain bootstrapping required.

The creator of Shiba Inu is known as "Ryoshi" — a pseudonymous identity who later deleted their Medium posts and Twitter account, essentially disappearing from the project. Unlike many crypto projects, Shiba Inu's development continued and accelerated after its founder's departure, driven by the community and a team called the Shib Army developers.

The famous 50% Vitalik burn

At launch, 50% of SHIB's total supply was sent to Vitalik Buterin's public Ethereum address — a well-known tactic to signal that the deployer no longer holds those tokens. Ryoshi expected Buterin to simply hold the tokens, effectively burning them. Instead, in May 2021, Buterin donated approximately 10% of his SHIB holdings (then worth ~$1 billion) to a COVID relief fund in India and burned the remaining ~90% (worth ~$7 billion at the time) permanently. This event is one of the most dramatic burns in crypto history and significantly reduced SHIB's circulating supply.

The SHIB ecosystem: three tokens and a Layer 2

SHIB is the primary token. LEASH (originally a rebase token, now fixed supply) is the secondary token. BONE is the governance token for ShibaSwap and the gas token for Shibarium. Shibarium is SHIB's own Ethereum Layer 2, launched August 2023, built on Polygon's architecture. This evolution from memecoin to multi-token ecosystem with an L2 distinguishes SHIB from other memecoins.

Is it legal in India?

Yes. SHIB is a VDA under Indian law. 30% tax and 1% TDS apply. See India regulation.

ShibaSwap DEX

ShibaSwap is Shiba Inu's native decentralised exchange, launched July 2021 on Ethereum. It uses an AMM model similar to Uniswap v2. Key features: DIG (add liquidity), BURY (stake SHIB/LEASH/BONE for rewards), SWAP (token exchanges). A portion of ShibaSwap trading fees goes to a xSHIB pool where SHIB stakers earn BONE rewards. ShibaSwap has also deployed on Shibarium to offer lower-fee trading.

What it's used for in real life

SHIB is listed on all major exchanges and is one of the most widely held tokens globally by number of unique addresses. Shibarium processes hundreds of thousands of daily transactions primarily from Shib Army community activity and gaming applications. The Shib Army community has organised charitable donations and real-world merchant adoption campaigns. Several restaurants and small businesses worldwide accept SHIB payments. SHIB: The Metaverse is a virtual land ownership project built on the Shibarium ecosystem.

Shibarium — the Layer 2

Shibarium is an EVM-compatible Ethereum L2 using Polygon's PoS architecture. BONE is the gas token — transactions cost BONE, not ETH. This means SHIB holders need BONE for gas, creating an economic link between the two tokens. Shibarium processes transactions faster and cheaper than Ethereum mainnet, enabling the types of gaming and microtransaction use cases that are impractical on L1.

How people evaluate this

SHIB is evaluated differently from pure memecoins because of its ecosystem depth. Relevant metrics: SHIB burn rate (community-driven, burns small amounts regularly), Shibarium daily transactions, ShibaSwap TVL and volume, BONE price (proxy for Shibarium utility demand). Token supply mechanics

SHIB's total supply at launch was 1 quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000). The Vitalik Buterin burn in May 2021 destroyed approximately 410 trillion SHIB permanently — about 41% of total supply. Ongoing community burn campaigns have destroyed additional supply over time. The SHIB token contract on Ethereum is a standard ERC-20 with no mint function — supply can only decrease. The burn address (0x000...dead) holds the burned tokens visibly on Etherscan.

Shibarium technical architecture

Shibarium is built on Polygon Edge (now Polygon Supernets) — the same framework used by several enterprise and gaming chains. It uses a PoS consensus with a set of validators staking BONE. Blocks are produced every ~5 seconds. The bridge between Ethereum and Shibarium uses a lock-and-mint model: ETH-side assets are locked in a bridge contract, and equivalent tokens are minted on Shibarium. BONE bridging to Shibarium enables users to pay gas fees.

Technical detail

The Shiba Inu token ecosystem uses a three-token model with deliberate economic linkages. SHIB is the base speculative and community token. LEASH (originally designed as an elastic supply rebase token tracking Dogecoin price, later converted to fixed supply of 107,647) is positioned as a scarcer premium token. BONE (230 million supply) is the utility token — governance voting power on ShibaSwap proposals and gas on Shibarium. This layered tokenomics was designed to create different entry points for community participation and different risk/reward profiles within the same ecosystem.
