What is Storj (STORJ)?

Nothing here is financial advice. STORJ can fall to zero. Infrastructure token value doesn't automatically follow product usage. Always do your own research.

🟢 The simple version

Plain English — no jargon. Start here.

One sentence

Storj (founded 2014, one of the oldest projects in crypto) turns spare hard-drive space around the world into a single cloud: your file is encrypted, sliced into 80 redundant pieces across independent nodes, and only 29 pieces are needed to rebuild it — with the people hosting those pieces earning STORJ tokens.

How can random strangers' hard drives be a safe cloud?

Three tricks. First, everything is encrypted before it leaves your machine — node operators host meaningless ciphertext. Second, erasure coding: each file becomes 80 pieces of which any 29 reconstruct it, so dozens of nodes can vanish without losing your data. Third, audits: the network constantly spot-checks nodes and stops paying ones that fail.

The result competes on the axis big clouds can't: no single company, datacenter, or government order can see or delete your data, and the redundancy is geographic by nature.

Where does the STORJ token fit?

STORJ is an Ethereum (ERC-20) token used to pay node operators for storage and bandwidth. Customers can pay in normal money (Storj the company converts), which keeps the developer experience simple — the token works in the background as the settlement layer for a global, permissionless workforce of disk space.

Is STORJ legal in India?

Yes. STORJ qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.

🟡 A bit more detail

For when you want to go a little deeper.

Storj vs Filecoin vs Arweave

The three big decentralized-storage models differ sharply: Storj is hot storage — fast, S3-compatible, aimed at replacing AWS for real workloads, run by a company with enterprise sales. Filecoin is a giant open marketplace for bulk storage deals with its own blockchain. Arweave is permanent storage — pay once, store forever. Storj is the most 'boring product, real customers' of the three, and deliberately so.

Storj is also an ancestor of the whole DePIN category: paying people in tokens to contribute real-world hardware (disks, wireless, GPUs) years before the acronym existed.

Token vs product

Storj-the-product can succeed while STORJ-the-token stagnates: customers can pay in fiat, and the company periodically sells tokens to fund operations, creating supply pressure. As with all infrastructure tokens, usage growth doesn't automatically mean token demand. Live data: CoinGecko

For the technically curious.

Key facts

  • Token: STORJ (ERC-20 on Ethereum)
  • Founded: 2014 — among the oldest crypto projects; current network ('Storj DCS', now simply Storj) since 2021
  • Design: Client-side encryption + erasure coding: 80 pieces, any 29 rebuild the file
  • Compatibility: S3-compatible API — drop-in for many AWS workloads
  • Payment flow: Customers can pay fiat; node operators are paid in STORJ
  • Category: Proto-DePIN — real hardware, token incentives
  • India tax: VDA — 30% gains tax + 1% TDS
