π Common Misconceptions
On this page
"Crypto = Bitcoin"
"It's all a Ponzi scheme"
"It's completely anonymous"
"It's just for criminals"
"Crypto = Bitcoin" (they're the same thing)
A very common starting assumption. Correct it gently, not condescendingly: "Bitcoin was the first, and it's still the biggest β but there are thousands of different cryptocurrencies now, doing genuinely different things. It's a bit like assuming all cars are Fords because Ford made some of the first ones." This analogy tends to land well and doesn't make anyone feel foolish for the assumption.
"It's all a Ponzi scheme"
This deserves a genuinely honest answer, not defensive dismissal β because some crypto projects genuinely have been exactly that (worth mentioning the Disasters hub's real fraud cases as evidence you're not just being defensive). But the honest correction: "Some individual projects have been outright fraud β that's real, and worth taking seriously. But the underlying technology, and legitimate uses like fast cross-border payments or transparent, verifiable financial records, are genuinely different from a Ponzi scheme's core mechanic of paying old investors with new investors' money."
"It's completely anonymous, so criminals can hide"
A precise, factual correction: "Actually, it's usually the opposite of anonymous β most blockchains, including Bitcoin, are pseudonymous, meaning every single transaction is permanently public and traceable, just not directly tied to your name unless that address gets linked to your identity somewhere, like an exchange." This is a genuinely surprising fact to most people and tends to reframe the whole conversation productively.
"It's just for criminals and scammers"
Acknowledge the real basis for this belief honestly β early crypto did have real association with illicit marketplaces, and scams remain a real, serious problem, which is exactly why you're running a safety-focused session. But add the honest counterpoint: by transaction volume, the overwhelming majority of crypto activity today is legitimate trading, saving, and increasingly real payments and business use β the criminal association, while real, represents a shrinking minority of overall activity as the space has matured.
