Solar panel manufacturing:
China manufactures approximately 80–85% of the world's solar panels. Key regions: Xinjiang (polysilicon), Jiangsu (cells and modules), Zhejiang (inverters). LONGi Solar (29.99°N 120.20°E Hangzhou HQ) is the world's largest solar manufacturer by capacity. JinkoSolar (28.45°N 115.90°E), Trina Solar (32.07°N 119.90°E), Canadian Solar (manufacturing in China). China's scale advantage: a single Chinese polysilicon plant can produce as much in one year as all non-Chinese manufacturers combined. The IEA notes that no country can credibly recreate this supply chain quickly — the "Made in China" solar panel is effectively a global public good for decarbonisation, whatever the trade policy implications.

Questions about China's energy
Can China really peak carbon emissions before 2030?
China has pledged to peak CO₂ emissions before 2030 under its NDC. As of 2024, the evidence is encouraging but not conclusive. China's renewable electricity additions are now genuinely outpacing coal's growth — in 2023, renewables (solar + wind + hydro) generated approximately 2,000 TWh, while coal generation grew by approximately 200 TWh. If this trend continues, coal's share of electricity generation will fall even if coal's absolute output stays flat. China's CO₂ emissions from the power sector may already be plateauing. However: (1) China's industrial energy demand (steel, cement, chemicals) is still growing, requiring coal for non-power uses; (2) Economic slowdown risks incentivising cheap coal over expensive clean alternatives; (3) The 106 GW of new coal approved in 2023 suggests coal as a hedge against energy insecurity, not a phase-out. Independent analysts (CREA, Carbon Brief) suggest China could peak emissions 2025–2027 in a business-as-usual trajectory — potentially meeting its 2030 pledge. But the peak could be high — at a level that still requires dramatic reductions to reach carbon neutrality by 2060.
