USA Energy

The USA produces 13.3 million bbl/day of oil (world's largest), exports 86 MT/yr of LNG (world's largest), and passed the $369 billion Inflation Reduction Act — the largest climate legislation in history. The shale revolution, the Permian Basin, Sabine Pass LNG, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and the IRA clean energy pivot.

The shale revolution

How horizontal drilling and fracking made the USA an energy superpower

The technology:
The shale revolution combined two technologies: horizontal drilling (drilling vertically then turning the drill bit horizontally to run along a shale formation for 1–3 km) and hydraulic fracturing (pumping water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure into the horizontal well to crack open the tight shale rock and release oil and gas). George Mitchell's Mitchell Energy first proved commercial shale gas at Barnett Shale (32.85°N 97.56°W, Fort Worth Texas) in the 1990s. The techniques spread to Marcellus Shale (Pennsylvania, 41.50°N 77.50°W), Permian Basin (31.9°N 102.5°W), Eagle Ford (28.50°N 98.00°W), and Bakken (47.7°N 103.0°W) through the 2000s and 2010s. USA became the world's largest oil producer by 2018 — a geopolitical transformation that reduced Saudi Arabia's leverage and enabled the USA to become energy-independent for the first time since the 1950s.
Scale and economics:
Permian Basin alone produces approximately 6 million bbl/day — more than any single country except Saudi Arabia and Russia. ExxonMobil's acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources (2023, $60 billion) was the largest energy deal in a decade, giving ExxonMobil approximately 1.4 million net acres in the Permian. Shale wells have short production lives (~3–5 years peak before decline) but low upfront capital — enabling rapid ramp-up and ramp-down as prices change. US shale producers have become the world's "swing producers" — they ramp up when prices are high and cut drilling when prices fall below their breakeven (~$45–65/bbl for Permian). US LNG exports created from 2016 (Sabine Pass first cargo) have fundamentally reshaped global gas markets — making gas a globally traded commodity like oil for the first time.
The Inflation Reduction Act

IRA (2022) — the largest climate investment in US history

The Inflation Reduction Act (signed August 2022, $369 billion in clean energy provisions over 10 years) represents a structural shift in US energy policy — using tax credits rather than regulations to drive decarbonisation. Key provisions:

Clean electricity provisions:
Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and Production Tax Credit (PTC) for solar, wind, batteries, geothermal, and nuclear — extended and expanded to 2032. Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (Section 45X) — $35/kWh credit for US-manufactured battery cells, $3/kg for US-made solar modules. This is directly designed to rebuild US battery and solar manufacturing that shifted to China. Clean Hydrogen PTC — up to $3/kg for green hydrogen. Nuclear Production Tax Credit — preserving existing nuclear fleet economics (Vogtle, 33.14°N 81.76°W). Result: Bloomberg NEF estimates IRA will add 150–360 GW of additional clean energy by 2030 vs pre-IRA trajectory.
Industrial and EV provisions:
$7,500 EV purchase credit (with North American assembly and battery content requirements — intentionally redirecting battery supply chains away from China). Commercial EV credit ($40,000 vehicles). Industrial decarbonisation grants. Clean technology manufacturing credits. Methane fee on oil and gas operators. Direct pay option allowing non-profit utilities, cooperatives, and tribal governments to receive credits as cash payments — democratising access. Political controversy: the domestic content requirements have caused friction with trading partners (EU, South Korea, Japan) who objected to discriminatory treatment at the WTO. Questions

Questions about US energy

How did the USA become the world's largest LNG exporter so quickly?
The USA went from essentially zero LNG exports in 2015 to approximately 86 MT/yr in 2023 — becoming the world's largest LNG exporter in just 8 years. The mechanism: (1) The shale gas revolution created a massive surplus of natural gas in the USA — Henry Hub prices fell below $3/MMBtu for years, far below the $10–15/MMBtu that European and Asian buyers were paying. This price differential made US LNG export economics highly attractive. (2) Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass (29.73°N 93.87°W, Louisiana) was the first to receive FERC approval for an LNG export terminal — permitting a controversial policy shift since the USA had previously restricted LNG exports to favour domestic industry with cheap gas. First export cargo was January 2016. (3) Once the infrastructure was permitted and built, additional trains were added rapidly — Freeport LNG (28.94°N 95.36W), Corpus Christi (27.77°N 97.36°W), Calcasieu Pass (29.80°N 93.30°W), Sabine Pass expansion. (4) Russia's invasion of Ukraine (2022) made the USA Europe's emergency LNG supplier — European buyers signed long-term contracts rapidly, justifying further US capacity expansion. The geopolitical implications are profound: US LNG has made Europe less dependent on Russian gas and strengthened NATO alliance energy security.
