The geological diversity of the Alsace Grand Cru sites is exceptional for a wine region covering only approximately 50 km north to south. The Vosges foothills expose a cross-section of rock types spanning hundreds of millions of years, from ancient granites and metamorphic rocks in the south to younger sedimentary formations in the north. This diversity is the basis for the individual site classifications — different geology produces genuinely different wines from the same variety. Major geological categories and their Grand Cru examples
Granite: Precambrian granite, formed approximately 330 million years ago during the Variscan orogeny. Found in the central and southern Haut-Rhin foothills. Produces wines of exceptional mineral tension, fine structure, and precision. Key sites: Brand (Turckheim — grey granite with feldspar, quartz, and mica; produces Riesling of extraordinary minerality and longevity), Schlossberg (Kaysersberg-Vignoble — the largest Grand Cru at 80 ha; weathered granite; steep terraces), Sommerberg (Niedermorschwihr).
Volcanic/basalt: The most extreme Alsace terroir. Rangen de Thann (Thann/Vieux-Thann) — the southernmost Grand Cru — sits on volcanic basalt and tuff of Carboniferous age (approximately 300 Ma). The steep south-facing slopes absorb intense heat; soils are dark, mineral, and almost brutally poor in nutrients. Produces some of Alsace's most powerful, long-lived wines. Zind-Humbrecht's Rangen Riesling and Pinot Gris are benchmark expressions of volcanic Alsace.
Limestone and marl: Jurassic and Cretaceous calcareous formations in the central zone produce rounder, more immediately accessible wines. Muscat and Gewurztraminer perform well on calcareous soils. Key sites: Goldert (Gueberschwihr — Jurassic calcareous marl, Muscat benchmark), Hatschbourg (calcareous clay).
Sandstone: Vosges sandstone (Buntsandstein, Triassic period, approximately 240 Ma) is found in the northern Bas-Rhin sites and produces lighter, more delicate wine styles. Moenchberg (Andlau/Eichhoffen) sits on sandstone with clay-limestone overlay.
Gneiss and schist: Metamorphic rocks producing wines of pronounced mineral character. Kastelberg (Andlau) — steep schist terraces; Wiebelsberg (Andlau) — sandy gneiss.
Loess: Wind-deposited silty calcareous soil covering many of the valley-facing lower slopes. Highly fertile — too fertile for Grand Cru designation in most cases — but where it overlies harder rock, produces soft, aromatic styles. Many basic Alsace AOC wines come from loess terroirs.
