Alsace Grand Cru AOC is a French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée covering 51 classified vineyard sites (lieux-dits) located on the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains in the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments of the Alsace region of France. The appellation is restricted to four noble varieties (cépages nobles): Riesling, Gewurztraminer (also written Gewürztraminer), Pinot Gris, and Muscat (specifically Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat Ottonel). The appellation was established by decree in 1983 (initial 25 sites) and expanded to 51 sites by 1992. France's most German wine region

Stand in the middle of Alsace and look at the wine labels. The grape varieties are printed on the front — Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris — in large text, more prominently than any French appellation name. The villages sound German: Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Ribeauvillé. The half-timbered houses are German. The food — choucroute, flammekueche, Munster cheese — is Germanic. The language spoken in local dialects is Alsatian, a German dialect.

This is not coincidence. Alsace has changed nationality four times since 1870, alternating between France and Germany twice in the space of 75 years. The wine culture — grape-variety labelling, aromatic white varieties, Germanic village names — is the legacy of centuries under German influence. France reclaimed Alsace in 1945. The wine stayed Germanic.

The Vosges Mountain Rain Shadow
Alsace is one of France's driest wine regions not because it is far south or particularly hot, but because the Vosges mountains directly to the west intercept Atlantic rainfall before it reaches the vineyards. As moisture-laden air rises over the Vosges, it cools and drops its rain on the western slopes. The air descending on the eastern side (where the vineyards are) is dry and warm. Colmar, the wine capital of Alsace, receives approximately 490–530mm of rain per year — less than half the annual rainfall of London, and one of the lowest figures for any wine city in France. This is why Alsace grapes ripen so fully and why late-harvest wines (which require sunny, dry autumns) are produced here with a regularity unusual for such a northerly latitude.

The Grand Cru classification identifies the 51 best vineyard sites — the spots on the Vosges foothills where the combination of slope, aspect, soil, and microclimate produces wines of exceptional character. Only four grape varieties are permitted on these sites. The idea is simple: the best terroir deserves the most expressive varieties, and four varieties is enough to show what fifty-one different vineyards can do.

What makes Alsace wine different from all other French wine?

Almost all French wine is labelled by region or appellation — Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Sancerre. The consumer is expected to know that Sancerre means Sauvignon Blanc, that Chablis means Chardonnay. In Alsace, the grape variety is printed on the front of the bottle. This is the German tradition, and it is unique in France.

The result is wine that is easier to understand on one level (you know exactly what grape you are drinking) but complex on another (the same Riesling from two adjacent Grand Cru vineyards with different soils can taste entirely different). The Grand Cru system exists precisely to honour this second complexity — to say that Schlossberg (granite) and Rangen (volcanic basalt) produce fundamentally different Riesling, and that both deserve to be named on the label.

Alsace also produces wines of exceptional sweetness in good years — the Vendanges Tardives (late harvest) and Sélection de Grains Nobles (botrytised berry selection). These are among France's great dessert wines, comparable to Sauternes but made from aromatic varieties that produce entirely different flavour profiles.

The Four Noble Varieties — Alsace Grand Cru Cépages

Riesling
Noble · Dry · High acid · Long-lived
Alsace Riesling is drier and more powerful than its German counterpart. High natural acidity; mineral, petrol (TDN — 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene), citrus, and floral character. Long-lived: good examples peak at 10–25 years. Best Grand Cru: Schlossberg (Kaysersberg-Vignoble), Rangen de Thann (volcanic), Brand (Turckheim). VIVC accession 10077.
Gewurztraminer
Noble · Aromatic · Low acid · Full body
The most immediately recognisable Alsace variety: intense rose, lychee, and spice aromas from high levels of linalool and geraniol monoterpenes. Low natural acidity means wines are opulent but can lack tension. Full body, sometimes off-dry despite appearing dry. Best Grand Cru: Hengst (Wintzenheim), Furstentum. VIVC accession 4660.
Pinot Gris
Noble · Rich · Smoky · Medium acid
Known as Tokay-Pinot Gris until 2007 (EU ruling removed the misleading Tokay reference). Rich, smoky, honeyed, and textured — often the most food-friendly Grand Cru variety. Medium acidity; full body; can age well. Best Grand Cru: Altenberg de Bergheim, Eichberg (Eguisheim). VIVC accession 9154. Genetic mutation of Pinot Noir.
Muscat
Noble · Aromatic · Dry · Light
Two varieties permitted: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains (VIVC 7853; higher quality, floral, fresh grape character) and Muscat Ottonel (VIVC 7882; less complex). Alsace Muscat is unusual — almost always dry, unlike most Muscat wines worldwide. Aromas of fresh grapes and orange blossom from high linalool content. Rarest Grand Cru variety; least planted.

Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles

Alsace's two late-harvest designations are defined by minimum sugar levels at harvest (measured in g/L of potential alcohol in the must) and are restricted to the four noble varieties. They are not guaranteed sweet — VT wines in particular can be dry or off-dry depending on the producer's choice to ferment fully or partially. SGN wines are invariably sweet due to the extreme concentration required.

These designations apply across the entire Alsace AOC (not only Grand Cru sites), but the Grand Cru sites with the best botrytis conditions — particularly those with morning mist from valleys — produce the finest SGN wines. Producers including Domaine Weinbach (Kaysersberg-Vignoble, Clos des Capucins, 68240 Kaysersberg), Domaine Zind-Humbrecht (4 Route de Colmar, 68230 Turckheim), and Hugel & Fils (3 Rue de la Première Armée, 68340 Riquewihr) are benchmarks for VT and SGN production.

Crémant d'Alsace — the sparkling wine

Crémant d'Alsace AOC (established 1976) is France's second largest traditional-method sparkling wine appellation after Champagne by volume. Unlike Grand Cru wines, Crémant d'Alsace is not restricted to the four noble varieties — Pinot Blanc (Auxerrois), Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay are all permitted. Minimum 9 months ageing on lees (12 months for vintage). The dominance of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois in Crémant production distinguishes it clearly from the still wine range. Production regulated under the Crémant d'Alsace AOC cahier des charges (INAO) and administered by CIVA.

The Geology of Alsace — Why 51 Sites Have Different Characters

The geological diversity of the Alsace Grand Cru sites is exceptional for a wine region covering only approximately 50 km north to south. The Vosges foothills expose a cross-section of rock types spanning hundreds of millions of years, from ancient granites and metamorphic rocks in the south to younger sedimentary formations in the north. This diversity is the basis for the individual site classifications — different geology produces genuinely different wines from the same variety. Major geological categories and their Grand Cru examples

Granite: Precambrian granite, formed approximately 330 million years ago during the Variscan orogeny. Found in the central and southern Haut-Rhin foothills. Produces wines of exceptional mineral tension, fine structure, and precision. Key sites: Brand (Turckheim — grey granite with feldspar, quartz, and mica; produces Riesling of extraordinary minerality and longevity), Schlossberg (Kaysersberg-Vignoble — the largest Grand Cru at 80 ha; weathered granite; steep terraces), Sommerberg (Niedermorschwihr).

Volcanic/basalt: The most extreme Alsace terroir. Rangen de Thann (Thann/Vieux-Thann) — the southernmost Grand Cru — sits on volcanic basalt and tuff of Carboniferous age (approximately 300 Ma). The steep south-facing slopes absorb intense heat; soils are dark, mineral, and almost brutally poor in nutrients. Produces some of Alsace's most powerful, long-lived wines. Zind-Humbrecht's Rangen Riesling and Pinot Gris are benchmark expressions of volcanic Alsace.

Limestone and marl: Jurassic and Cretaceous calcareous formations in the central zone produce rounder, more immediately accessible wines. Muscat and Gewurztraminer perform well on calcareous soils. Key sites: Goldert (Gueberschwihr — Jurassic calcareous marl, Muscat benchmark), Hatschbourg (calcareous clay).

Sandstone: Vosges sandstone (Buntsandstein, Triassic period, approximately 240 Ma) is found in the northern Bas-Rhin sites and produces lighter, more delicate wine styles. Moenchberg (Andlau/Eichhoffen) sits on sandstone with clay-limestone overlay.

Gneiss and schist: Metamorphic rocks producing wines of pronounced mineral character. Kastelberg (Andlau) — steep schist terraces; Wiebelsberg (Andlau) — sandy gneiss.

Loess: Wind-deposited silty calcareous soil covering many of the valley-facing lower slopes. Highly fertile — too fertile for Grand Cru designation in most cases — but where it overlies harder rock, produces soft, aromatic styles. Many basic Alsace AOC wines come from loess terroirs.

Terpene Chemistry — Why Gewurztraminer and Muscat Smell Like That

The extraordinarily intense aromatic character of Gewurztraminer and Muscat — which sets them apart from all other major white wine varieties — is explained by their exceptionally high concentrations of free and bound monoterpene compounds. Research by Günter Rapp (Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim, Geisenheimer Str., 65366 Geisenheim, Germany) and others established that Gewurztraminer contains among the highest measured concentrations of free linalool (floral, lavender), geraniol (rose), and nerol (fresh, rose) in any grape variety.

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains shows similarly high terpene levels — particularly linalool (fresh grape, floral) and linalool oxides — explaining its characteristic fresh grape aroma even in dry wine. The key distinction from Gewurztraminer is that Muscat's terpene profile is dominated by linalool and linalool oxides, producing a fresh, simple grape aroma rather than Gewurztraminer's more complex, heavy floral-spice profile which includes significant levels of cis-rose oxide (the compound most responsible for the characteristic lychee and rose character).

Riesling's aroma chemistry is different: younger Riesling is characterised by citrus and floral compounds (norisoprenoids and monoterpenes at lower concentrations than Gewurztraminer), but aged Riesling develops a distinctive petroleum/petrol note from TDN (1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene), a norisoprenoid formed by the degradation of carotenoids (particularly β-carotene and lutein) under the influence of light exposure and bottle ageing. TDN is a defining marker of mature Riesling quality — its perception threshold is approximately 2 µg/L; quality aged Alsace Riesling routinely shows 20–40 µg/L. Research: Strauss, C.R. et al. Grand Cru production requirements (INAO decree): maximum yield 55 hL/ha (versus 80 hL/ha for basic Alsace AOC); minimum natural alcohol (before any enrichment) varies by site and variety, typically 11% for Riesling, 12% for Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris; manual harvest requirement for most sites; tastings panel certification (agrément) required before labelling as Grand Cru. Two exceptions to the four-variety rule exist by specific INAO decree: Altenberg de Bergheim (Bergheim) permits Gewurztraminer blends; Zotzenberg (Mittelbergheim) also permits Pinot Blanc / Auxerrois — the only Grand Cru site not restricted to the four principal noble varieties.

Alsace Premier Cru AOC: A third tier between Alsace AOC and Grand Cru, established by INAO decree in 2011 and covering specific named vineyard sites within communal appellations. Less widely known than Grand Cru but increasingly important for producers in communes without Grand Cru sites.
