Vines older than Australia's federation — and still producing

When European settlers planted the first vines in South Australia's Barossa Valley in the 1840s, they had no idea they were creating what would become one of the world's most extraordinary viticultural archives. Those vines — mostly Shiraz, some Grenache and Mourvèdre — are still alive. Australia federated in 1901. Some of those vines were already 60 years old when Australia became a country. They are now approaching 180 years.

What makes this extraordinary is that it is almost unique in the world. In Europe, a fungal disease called phylloxera — a microscopic aphid that attacks vine roots — swept through virtually every wine region from the 1860s onward, forcing growers to uproot their vineyards and replant on resistant American rootstocks. Very few European regions escaped. South Australia, thanks to its quarantine history and geographic isolation, was never significantly infested. The original vines survived, on their own roots, continuously producing fruit for over 170 years.

What old vines actually change in the wine
Old vines do not automatically make better wine — but they do change the character of the fruit they produce. Very old vines have extensive root systems penetrating deep into the subsoil, accessing water and nutrients at depth and providing natural buffer against drought and heat stress. They produce fewer bunches per vine (lower yield — which concentrates flavour). The wood itself contains decades of stored carbohydrate reserves that support consistent ripening even in difficult vintages. The result — in Barossa's best old-vine Shiraz — is fruit of extraordinary concentration and evenness: deep blackberry and dark plum, chocolate, and earth, with a texture impossible to replicate in younger vines.

The Barossa's two sub-regions produce very different wines. The valley floor (Barossa Valley GI) is warm and flat, the home of old-vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre — rich, generous, full-bodied wines of considerable power. Eden Valley, rising 400–600 metres into the hills to the east, is dramatically cooler — more like a European climate — and produces the Barossa's most celebrated Riesling as well as more elegant, floral Shiraz.

Barossa Shiraz vs Northern Rhône Syrah — the same grape, two worlds

Shiraz and Syrah are genetically identical (VIVC accession 11370; parents Dureza × Mondeuse Blanche). The difference is entirely environment and winemaking tradition. Northern Rhône Syrah (Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie) grows on steep granite terraces in a cool continental climate; the wines are lean, floral (violets), with white pepper character and high structural tannin. Barossa Shiraz grows on warm, flat valley floor in a hot Mediterranean-continental climate; the wines are full-bodied, dark-fruited, chocolatey, with lower natural acidity and — in old-vine expressions — remarkable concentration and longevity.

Australian winemakers began calling the variety "Shiraz" (the older English spelling, historically used by James Busby who brought cuttings to Australia in 1832) when French producers were calling it Syrah. This naming divergence has persisted and now serves as a useful shorthand: Shiraz typically signals a warmer-climate, richer, more opulent style; Syrah suggests a cooler-climate, more structured, floral approach.

The Old Vine Charter — Four Age Tiers

The Old Vine Charter is administered by the Barossa Grape and Wine Association (BGWA). Producers who qualify may use the relevant tier designation on their labels and promotional materials. Qualification requires documentary evidence of vine age (historical plantation records, winery records, BGWA registration). The four tiers:

Penfolds Grange — history and production

Penfolds Grange is Australia's most internationally recognised wine. It was created by Max Schubert, Penfolds' head winemaker, following his visit to Bordeaux in 1950 where he observed the long-ageing properties of first-growth Bordeaux produced from Cabernet Sauvignon in small oak barrels. Schubert adapted the concept for the Australian context, replacing Cabernet with Barossa Shiraz (which he identified as capable of the same ageing trajectory) and using new American oak (rather than French oak) because it was available and affordable in postwar Australia. The result was an entirely new wine style.

The first experimental Grange was made in 1951. Penfolds' management suppressed the wine in the late 1950s, considering it too unconventional — Schubert continued making it covertly until management reversed the decision after tasting older vintages that had aged magnificently. Grange was officially re-launched in 1960. The 1955 vintage, later recognised as one of the great wines of the 20th century, was made clandestinely during the suppression period.

Grange is not a single-vineyard wine: it is a multi-vineyard, multi-region blend sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and other South Australian regions, with the specific composition varying annually depending on which vineyards produced the best fruit. The blend is predominantly Shiraz with occasional small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged approximately 20 months in new American oak hogsheads (300L) before bottling. Minimum ageing before release: 18 months in bottle. GSM — Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre blends

Beyond single-variety Shiraz, Barossa's other great tradition is the GSM blend — a combination of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre (Mataro is the Australian name for Mourvèdre) that mirrors the Southern Rhône style but in a warmer, more generous register. Old-vine Barossa Grenache (some blocks planted 1850s–1890s) produces wines of extraordinary concentration: red fruit, raspberry, and kirsch with glycerol richness from the variety's naturally high sugar. GSM blends use Grenache as the fruit and texture base, Shiraz for depth and pepper, and Mourvèdre for earthiness, grip, and structure. Phylloxera — Why Barossa's Old Vines Survived

Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (phylloxera) is a microscopic aphid native to eastern North America that feeds on the roots of European Vitis vinifera vines. It was accidentally introduced to Europe via imported American vine material in the 1860s. European vinifera vines had no evolutionary resistance; the root-feeding biotype caused root necrosis and killed vines within 3–5 years of infestation. The epidemic spread across France from the late 1860s, reached Spain and Italy in the 1870s–1880s, and had destroyed approximately two-thirds of European vineyards by 1900. The solution — grafting vinifera vines onto phylloxera-resistant American rootstocks — was developed in the 1880s and is now universal in affected regions.

South Australia's phylloxera-free status is maintained by strict movement controls under the South Australian Phytosanitary (Grape Phylloxera) Regulations, administered by Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA), GPO Box 1671, Adelaide SA 5001 · pir.sa.gov.au. Movement of vine material, soil, and equipment from phylloxera-affected zones into South Australia is restricted. The entire state of South Australia is classified as a Phylloxera Exclusion Zone (PEZ) under Australia's national GrapeVine Biosecurity Plan, coordinated by Wine Australia. This regulatory framework is what protects the Barossa's old ungrafted vines from the threat that destroyed their European counterparts.

The practical consequence is that Barossa old vines grow on their own roots — the same genetic material that was planted 130–180 years ago, not grafted onto American rootstock. Own-rooted vines are thought by many viticulturalists to access subsoil differently from grafted vines and to express terroir more directly; the evidence for this is contested in scientific literature, but the commercial and heritage significance of ungrafted old-vine status is acknowledged by producers and the BGWA.

Henschke Hill of Grace — Benchmark Ancestor Vine Shiraz

Henschke's Hill of Grace vineyard in the Eden Valley is Australia's most famous single-vineyard wine and one of the most celebrated individual vineyard expressions of Shiraz anywhere in the world. The vineyard sits in the Eden Valley sub-region at approximately 470 metres altitude near Keyneton. The Shiraz vines — planted by the Henschke family's German ancestors in the 1860s, making them among Australia's oldest Ancestor Vine-classified Shiraz blocks — grow on alluvial clay-loam soils over ironstone and slate subsoil, a combination that produces wines of unusual combination: the concentration and power of ancient vines with the elegance and higher acidity of Eden Valley's cooler climate.

Hill of Grace is made exclusively from the single vineyard named on the label. The 2026 vintage is approximately the 60th consecutive single-vineyard release (first produced commercially in 1958 by Cyril Henschke). It is aged in French and American oak for approximately 18 months and typically requires 10–20 years from vintage before approaching peak drinking. The comparison between Hill of Grace (old-vine Eden Valley Shiraz on alluvial clay over ironstone) and the same winery's Mount Edelstone (Barossa Valley floor, also Ancestor Vine Shiraz but warmer, richer, more opulent) is one of Australian wine's most instructive terroir studies — same variety, same producer, different geology and altitude, entirely different wines.

Barossa Soil Geology — Red-Brown Earths, Loam, and Ironstone

The Barossa Valley's geological substrate is predominantly Precambrian and Cambrian metamorphic rocks (phyllite, schist, and quartzite) of the Adelaide Geosyncline, covered by varying depths of alluvial and colluvial soils. The distinctive red-brown earth (terra rossa-style) of the valley floor — a red clay-loam with high iron oxide content — develops over limestone or ironstone subsoil and is associated with the warmest, richest Shiraz styles. Eden Valley's geology differs significantly: the high plateau is dominated by Cambrian granite and metamorphic quartzite with thinner, more acid soils and significantly better water retention from higher rainfall. This geological contrast — hot red loam in the valley vs cool, thin granite soils in Eden Valley — is the geological basis for the dramatic stylistic difference between Barossa Valley Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling.
