Maipo Valley
Chile's Bordeaux. The valley that wraps around Santiago and climbs into the Andes. Own-rooted Cabernet Sauvignon in country that phylloxera never reached.
Maipo Valley (Valle del Maipo) is a Denominación de Origen (DO) wine valley in Chile's Central Valley wine region, situated immediately south and east of Santiago, in the Metropolitan and O'Higgins administrative regions. It is Chile's most historically significant wine valley — the first area of modern commercial wine production, with large estates established from the mid-19th century. The Maipo River runs east–west through the valley, sourced from Andean snowmelt. The valley extends from the Andean foothills (precordillera) at approximately 600–900 metres altitude in the east (Maipo Alto — Pirque, Puente Alto, Buin sub-zones) to the lower, flatter coastal plain in the west (~400–500m). Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant and internationally defining variety, accounting for approximately 60–70% of Maipo plantings. Chile's wine designation system is administered by SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero) under Decree Law 464 (1994) and its amendments. Chilean vines are own-rooted (ungrafted) — phylloxera has never reached Chile due to the natural barriers of the Andes to the east, the Atacama Desert to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Patagonian cold to the south.
Why Chile's vines are own-rooted — and what that means
Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) — the root louse that devastated European vineyards from the 1860s — has never reached Chile. The country's geography provides natural quarantine: the Andes mountains to the east (among the world's highest mountain ranges), the Atacama Desert to the north (one of the driest places on earth), the Pacific Ocean to the west, and cold Patagonia to the south. No land route exists by which phylloxera could migrate to Chile without crossing barriers that are impassable to soil-borne organisms.
As a result, Chilean vines grow on their own roots — ungrafted, as all European vines grew before the phylloxera epidemic. Like the Barossa Valley, this means vines can remain productive for 100+ years without the need for grafting onto American rootstock. Some of Chile's oldest ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon vines are documented to be over 100 years old. The own-rooted status is one reason Chilean Cabernet has a distinct earthy, mineral character that some tasters distinguish from grafted-vine Cabernet elsewhere.
Maipo Alto vs valley floor — the quality gradient
Maipo Alto (High Maipo) refers to the vineyards in the Andean foothills east of Santiago — principally the Pirque and Puente Alto sub-zones. These vineyards sit at 600–900 metres altitude on rocky, alluvial soils of Andean origin (gravel, sand, clay derived from glacial and fluvial Andean deposits). The altitude, gravelly soils, and proximity to the Andes snowmelt produce Cabernet Sauvignon with higher natural acidity, better structure, and more complex fruit character than the flatter, more fertile valley floor vineyards to the west.
Almaviva — the joint venture between Concha y Toro and Baron Philippe de Rothschild (producers of Mouton-Rothschild) — sources its Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, Maipo Alto. It is Chile's most internationally recognised luxury wine and consistently draws comparison to Bordeaux first growths in international blind tastings. Concha y Toro's Don Melchor — also from Puente Alto — has been Chile's most awarded Cabernet Sauvignon for decades.
Chilean DO system — how it works
Chile's wine geographic designation system is administered by SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero) under Decree Law 464 (1994) and subsequent amendments. The system has four tiers: Region (largest — e.g. Central Valley); Sub-region/Valley (e.g. Maipo Valley); Zone (e.g. Maipo Alto); and Area (smallest). A wine bearing a DO designation must contain at least 75% grapes from that geographic area — a lower threshold than Australia, the USA, or South Africa. A wine bearing a vintage year must contain at least 75% wine from that year. A varietal designation requires at least 75% of that variety.
The Chilean system also introduced a coastal/Andean/between designation system (DO Costero, DO Entre Cordilleras, DO Andes) in 2012 to allow producers to specify whether their vineyards are coastal-influenced, between mountain ranges, or in the Andes foothills — a more meaningful geographic distinction for Chile's topographically extreme landscape than simple valley names.

Andean alluvial soils — the terroir of Puente Alto
Puente Alto's vineyards sit on alluvial fan deposits from the Maipo and Clarillo rivers — glacial and fluvial material transported from the Andes and deposited in layered strata of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. These soils are well-drained, low in organic matter, and have variable rooting depth depending on the specific layer composition. The gravel layers provide rapid drainage and low water retention — forcing vine roots to penetrate deeply (documented at 3–5 metres in some Puente Alto sites) to access moisture from deeper subsoil horizons.
The root depth and water stress from the well-drained alluvial soils produces the same concentration mechanism as Médoc's Cabernet on Garonne river gravel — a documented parallel that Almaviva's winemaking teams have explicitly referenced. The combination of Andean alluvial soils, 600–700m altitude (higher than the Médoc's sea-level sites), 320 days of sunshine per year, and irrigation from pure snowmelt water (very low mineral content, contrasting with European river water) produces Cabernet Sauvignon with great concentration but a distinct freshness and aromatic purity that differs from both Bordeaux and Napa Valley.
