Charaka Samhita, Chikitsasthana 26.1
Hridayam Ojas sthanam — The heart is the seat of Ojas. The eight drops of Para Ojas reside in the Hridaya. When the heart is diseased, Ojas is directly threatened — which is why Hridroga is among the most serious of classical conditions. The treatment of Hridroga is simultaneously the protection of Ojas.

Five classical types

Vataja Hridroga: Palpitations, irregular rhythm, anxiety, chest discomfort, dryness — corresponds to arrhythmia and anxiety-related cardiac symptoms. Pittaja Hridroga: Burning chest pain, fever, thirst, inflammations of the cardiac region — corresponds to inflammatory cardiac conditions. Kaphaja Hridroga: Heaviness, lethargy, congestion, bradycardia-type presentations — corresponds to conditions of cardiac sluggishness and congestion. Sannipataja: Severe, combined features. Krimija Hridroga: Documented in classical texts as cardiac conditions arising from Krimi (infective agents) — the classical documentation of rheumatic heart disease and infective endocarditis, two millennia before germ theory.

Arjuna — the primary cardiac herb
Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) is the pre-eminent classical Hridaya herb — placed in the Hridya (cardiac-beneficial) group in Charaka Samhita. Arjunarishta is the primary classical Arishta formulation for Hridroga. Modern pharmacological research: Arjunoside, Arjunolic acid, and triterpenoid saponins from Arjuna bark have documented ACE-inhibitor analogous activity, antioxidant effects on cardiac tissue, and clinical trials showing reduction in anginal frequency and improvement in exercise tolerance in stable angina patients. Research citations: Bharani et al. (1995) Journal of the Association of Physicians of India; Ram et al. (1997) Journal of Ethnopharmacology. API Part I, Vol I, Monograph: Terminalia arjuna.
Hrid Basti

Classical Panchakarma procedure for Hridroga

Hrid Basti (pooling of warm medicated oil in a dough ring placed over the heart region) is the classical external Panchakarma procedure specifically documented for Hridroga. Warm Bala Taila or Kshirabala Taila is held in the dough ring for 20–30 minutes, allowing the oil's thermal and pharmacological properties to penetrate directly to the cardiac region. Documented for Vataja Hridroga with palpitations and chest tightness.
