Hridroga — Classical Cardiac Conditions
Hridroga is the classical Ayurvedic documentation of cardiac conditions — conditions of the Hridaya (heart) that produce palpitations, chest pain, breathlessness, and impaired cardiac function. The Hridaya occupies a unique position in classical Ayurveda: it is simultaneously the seat of Ojas (vital essence), the root of Rasavaha Srotas (plasma channels), and the seat of consciousness — making its health central to life itself.
Five classical types
Vataja Hridroga: Palpitations, irregular rhythm, anxiety, chest discomfort, dryness — corresponds to arrhythmia and anxiety-related cardiac symptoms. Pittaja Hridroga: Burning chest pain, fever, thirst, inflammations of the cardiac region — corresponds to inflammatory cardiac conditions. Kaphaja Hridroga: Heaviness, lethargy, congestion, bradycardia-type presentations — corresponds to conditions of cardiac sluggishness and congestion. Sannipataja: Severe, combined features. Krimija Hridroga: Documented in classical texts as cardiac conditions arising from Krimi (infective agents) — the classical documentation of rheumatic heart disease and infective endocarditis, two millennia before germ theory.
Classical Panchakarma procedure for Hridroga
Hrid Basti (pooling of warm medicated oil in a dough ring placed over the heart region) is the classical external Panchakarma procedure specifically documented for Hridroga. Warm Bala Taila or Kshirabala Taila is held in the dough ring for 20–30 minutes, allowing the oil's thermal and pharmacological properties to penetrate directly to the cardiac region. Documented for Vataja Hridroga with palpitations and chest tightness.
