Garbhini Paricharya — Pregnancy Care
Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 8 documents month-by-month dietary and lifestyle guidelines for pregnancy — one of the most detailed prenatal care protocols in any pre-modern medical tradition. Each month corresponds to a stage of embryological development and a specific Dosha-Dhatu requirement.
Month-by-month protocol
Conception to first month
Sashticashali rice with milk and ghee. Light, cool, sweet foods. Avoid pungent, sour, and heavy foods. The embryo at this stage is described as Kalala — liquid essence. Milk is the specific Pathya food for this stage as it nourishes Rasa Dhatu — the first tissue the embryo develops.
Sweet, cool preparations
Milk preparations continue. Sweet fruits — grapes, dates. The embryo develops solid form (Ghana). Beginning of cardiovascular development corresponds with emphasis on Rasavaha Srotas nourishment.
Three-flavour diet
Sweet, sour, and salty tastes introduced. Milk with honey and ghee. Shashti rice. The classical recognition that the embryo now begins to experience sensations (Iccha — desire) — the mother's cravings (Dauhridya) should be carefully observed and satisfied, as suppressing them is documented as harming the developing child.
Nourishing strengthening foods
Butter and milk in abundance. The foetus develops strength (Bala) — milk and ghee support this. The mother's Hridaya (heart-seat of consciousness) begins to be shared with the foetus.
Ghrita-dominant nutrition
Ghee preparations increase. Shatavari Ghrita or plain cow ghee with milk. The foetus's intellect (Buddhi) begins to develop — the classical emphasis on ghee at this stage corresponds with modern understanding of essential fatty acids in neurological development.
Brimhana — tissue building
Maximum nourishing foods. Meat soups (where applicable), milk, ghee, sweet preparations. The foetus is now essentially complete — this is the primary Brimhana (tissue-building) month.
Yavagu — thin gruel diet
Transition to lighter foods. Yavagu (thin rice gruel) with ghee. Classical reason: Ojas moves between mother and foetus in this month — disturbing it with heavy food can harm both. This corresponds with the physiological third-trimester transfer of maternal immunity to the foetus.
Preparation for delivery
Medicated ghee preparations supporting Apana Vata (downward movement force for delivery). Dashamooladi ghee. The diet returns to normal nourishing food. Basti (medicated enema) specifically documented for the ninth month to prepare the birth channels.
