Aave lets you earn interest by lending out your crypto, or borrow crypto by putting up other crypto as security โ all without a bank.
A bank, but run by code
Aave does what a bank does โ lending and borrowing โ but with no bank involved. If you have crypto sitting idle, you can lend it through Aave and earn interest. If you need to borrow, you can, as long as you lock up more crypto as security (collateral). It's all handled automatically by smart contracts, out in the open.
Why people use it
Lenders earn a return on crypto they'd otherwise just be holding. Borrowers can get cash-like funds without selling their crypto (handy for various reasons). It's one of the biggest and most trusted names in "DeFi" โ decentralised finance. Its coin is AAVE.
What to keep in mind
Borrowing here is risky: if the crypto you locked up falls in value too much, it can be automatically sold off to repay the loan ("liquidation"), and you lose it. And like any app built on code, there's always some risk of bugs. Powerful, but understand it before diving in. In India, interest earned is taxable.
