Plain English β no jargon. Start here.
Axie Infinity is the game that proved "play-to-earn" could work at scale β a PokΓ©mon-inspired NFT battle game built by Sky Mavis (Vietnam) that at peak had millions of players earning real income, particularly in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, before its economy collapsed and a $625 million bridge hack devastated the ecosystem in 2022.
How did Axie work at peak?
The Axie loop: buy three Axie NFTs (creatures) to start playing, battle other players in turn-based combat, earn SLP (Smooth Love Potion β the in-game token), sell SLP for real money. At peak in 2021, daily SLP earnings were worth $20-50 per day for an active player. In countries like the Philippines, where average wages might be $10-15/day, this was transformative β people quit their jobs to play Axie full time.
Scholarship programs emerged: wealthy players lent Axies to poorer players who couldn't afford the entry cost (~$1,000+ for three Axies at peak). The lender took 30-40% of earnings; the scholar kept the rest. This created entire Axie guilds (like Yield Guild Games) acting as Axie lending platforms. The Philippine gaming community became core to Axie's identity β YouTube documentaries followed families whose incomes depended on Axie. It was crypto's first clear demonstration that blockchain gaming could create real economic opportunity in developing economies.
The Ronin Bridge hack β $625M
In March 2022, hackers (later attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group) exploited the Ronin bridge β the bridge connecting the Ronin blockchain (Axie's custom Ethereum sidechain) to Ethereum. They stole 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC β approximately $625 million at the time, one of the largest crypto hacks ever. The hack went undetected for six days. Sky Mavis eventually compensated users with $150M from investors and the rest over time, but the reputational and ecosystem damage was severe.
Is AXS legal in India?
Yes. AXS and SLP qualify as Virtual Digital Assets (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.
π‘ A bit more detail
For when you want to go a little deeper.
SLP collapse and the P2E lesson
SLP (Smooth Love Potion) went from ~$0.35 at peak to under $0.003 β a 99%+ decline. The collapse happened for the same structural reason as every P2E economy: minting new Axies required burning SLP (spending), but players collectively earned far more SLP than they spent. As long as new players kept buying in, demand for SLP was high. When new player growth slowed (due to high entry costs), SLP sell pressure overwhelmed demand. The token collapsed. Earnings in fiat terms evaporated. Players who had quit their jobs to earn found their income vanished. The Filipino player community was especially impacted.
The lesson from Axie's SLP collapse shaped every blockchain game token design that followed: purely inflationary earn tokens without robust sinks (places where tokens are burned or spent) will collapse. Illuvium, STEPN, and later games all specifically designed their earn tokens differently, citing Axie's failure as the cautionary example. Axie's failure is probably the most important data point in GameFi economics.
The Ronin hack exposed the risks of custom bridge infrastructure β Ronin's bridge had only 9 validators, 5 of which were compromised. Post-hack, Sky Mavis increased validators and added decentralised guardian nodes. But bridge hacks remain a significant risk for any chain that bridges large value between an Ethereum sidechain and mainnet. Live data: CoinGecko
Axie Origin and the rebuild
Sky Mavis launched Axie Infinity: Origin (2022) β a redesigned version with a free-to-start mode (removing the $1,000 entry barrier that had become its main criticism), rune and charm systems for deeper gameplay, and a revised token economy. Origin represented a genuine attempt to prioritise game quality and economic sustainability over pure earn mechanics. AXS (the governance token) was designed differently from SLP β capped, used for breeding and staking, with governance rights. The rebuilding effort showed Sky Mavis's commitment to the long term despite the hack and economy collapse.
