What is Enjin (ENJ)?

🟢 The simple version
Plain English — no jargon. Start here.
Enjin is a veteran gaming blockchain infrastructure company (founded 2009, long before crypto was mainstream) that created ERC-1155 — the multi-token NFT standard used across all of Ethereum — and launched its own dedicated Enjin Blockchain in 2023 for gaming NFT minting with zero gas fees.
What is ERC-1155 and why does it matter?
Before ERC-1155, Ethereum had ERC-20 (fungible tokens, like currencies) and ERC-721 (non-fungible tokens, like unique collectibles). Enjin proposed and helped standardise ERC-1155 in 2019 — a hybrid standard that lets a single smart contract manage both fungible and non-fungible tokens simultaneously. A game item contract using ERC-1155 can represent: 10,000 identical common swords (fungible), 100 rare magic shields (semi-fungible), and 1 unique legendary weapon (non-fungible) — all in one contract.
ERC-1155 is now universally used across Ethereum gaming and NFT projects for gas efficiency (batch transfers of multiple token types in one transaction) and flexibility. Enjin did not patent this standard — it's open and used by everyone — but creating it demonstrates Enjin's early technical leadership in gaming blockchain infrastructure. ERC-1155's impact on the broader NFT ecosystem is Enjin's most lasting contribution to crypto.
ENJ token and the "melt" mechanic
Enjin's core token mechanic: ENJ is "infused" into NFTs when they are created. To create a game item as an NFT, the developer locks ENJ inside it. Players who own the NFT can "melt" it — destroying the NFT and recovering the ENJ inside. This gives every Enjin-backed NFT a floor value in ENJ — you know the minimum it is worth because you can always melt it back. This backing mechanic was innovative in 2018 and gave Enjin NFTs a property that pure Ethereum NFTs (like ERC-721 tokens) didn't have: a guaranteed minimum value.
Is ENJ legal in India?
Yes. ENJ qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.

For when you want to go a little deeper.
Enjin Blockchain — purpose-built for gaming NFTs
In April 2023, Enjin launched the Enjin Blockchain — a Substrate-based (Polkadot ecosystem) blockchain specifically designed for gaming NFTs. Key features: no gas fees for NFT creation and transfers (fees are abstracted away), native support for fuel tanks (protocol-level sponsored transactions where games can pay fees on behalf of players), and a built-in NFT standard without needing to deploy custom smart contracts. The Enjin Matrixchain is a Polkadot parachain, giving it interoperability with the Polkadot ecosystem.
The Enjin Blockchain's "fuel tanks" feature deserves particular attention. In most blockchain games, players must pay gas fees for every action — a significant UX barrier. Fuel tanks let game developers pre-fund a tank that pays transaction fees for their players automatically. Players never see or interact with gas — the game just works. This is Enjin's answer to Immutable Passport's invisible wallet: gasless onboarding at the protocol level rather than the wallet level.
Enjin is the veteran — it was building blockchain gaming infrastructure in 2017-2018 when Axie Infinity was just launching. But the gaming blockchain space has become very competitive: Immutable (zkEVM), Ronin (open to all games post-Axie), Gala's GalaChain, and Treasure Chain all compete for gaming developers. Enjin's advantage is its long track record and the ERC-1155 heritage; its challenge is competing with chains that have more recent DeFi ecosystems and celebrity game studios. Live data: CoinGecko
Enjin ecosystem and notable games
Enjin has powered NFTs in traditional games through SDKs for Unity, Unreal Engine, Java, C++, and other platforms. Microsoft partnered with Enjin to release Azure Hero NFTs (2020) — achievement-based NFTs given to Azure cloud platform contributors. Atari used Enjin for some NFT projects. The "Multiverse" concept — items created on Enjin that work across multiple games — was Enjin's version of the cross-game interoperability idea that Treasure later explored with MAGIC.

Key facts
- Token: ENJ (infused into NFTs; also used for governance and staking)
- Founded: 2009 (as a gaming community platform) — pre-dates crypto mainstream
- Blockchain: Enjin Blockchain (Substrate/Polkadot parachain, April 2023) — separate from Ethereum
- Also on Ethereum: Original ENJ token and ERC-1155 NFTs remain on Ethereum
- ERC-1155: Enjin co-created this universal Ethereum multi-token standard (2019) — used by all major NFT projects
- Melt mechanic: ENJ locked inside NFTs; melt the NFT to recover ENJ — gives NFTs a floor value
- Fuel tanks: Enjin Blockchain feature — game developers pay gas on behalf of players (protocol-level gasless UX)
- Notable partnerships: Microsoft Azure Hero NFTs, Atari, various gaming studios
- vs Immutable: Enjin = veteran + own blockchain + ERC-1155 heritage; Immutable = newer + zkEVM + EA/Ubisoft
- vs Gala: Enjin = infrastructure/protocol; Gala = publisher/platform
- India tax: VDA — 30% gains tax + 1% TDS
