Immutable is a platform built specifically to power blockchain games on Ethereum — it handles all the complicated, expensive blockchain parts behind the scenes so that game studios can let players truly own their in-game items as tradeable digital assets, without players ever needing to understand or pay for the underlying technology.
The problem with blockchain gaming
The promise of blockchain gaming is appealing: instead of in-game items (skins, weapons, characters, cards) being locked inside a game where the company controls them, they become NFTs that players genuinely own and can trade or sell freely. If a game shuts down, your items still exist; if you are done playing, you can sell what you earned. But there is a serious practical obstacle. Games involve constant small actions — earning an item, trading a card, crafting a weapon — and on Ethereum, every such action could cost a meaningful amount in "gas" fees and take time to confirm. Nobody wants to pay $5 and wait thirty seconds to move a virtual sword. This friction made real blockchain gaming on Ethereum impractical for years.
Immutable was founded specifically to solve this. It provides the infrastructure — a specialised Layer 2 scaling solution plus a suite of developer tools — that lets games offer instant, fee-free (or near-free) transactions for players while still being secured by Ethereum. Game studios can build on Immutable without becoming blockchain experts, and players can enjoy true ownership without dealing with gas fees, confusing wallets, or slow confirmations.
Where Immutable came from
Immutable was founded in Australia by brothers James and Robbie Ferguson, along with Alex Connolly. Crucially, their first product was a blockchain game of their own — Gods Unchained, a competitive trading card game where cards are NFTs players own. Building Gods Unchained taught them firsthand how painful Ethereum's fees and speed were for gaming, and that frustration directly motivated them to build Immutable X as the scaling solution they needed. This origin matters: Immutable did not approach gaming as outside theorists but as game developers who hit the wall themselves and built the tooling to get past it.
What Immutable offers studios
Immutable provides a complete platform for building blockchain games: the scaling technology to make transactions fast and cheap, a player wallet system (Immutable Passport) that hides blockchain complexity behind a simple sign-in, a marketplace for trading game NFTs, and tools for minting and managing in-game assets. The pitch to game studios is that they can focus on making a good game while Immutable handles all the blockchain plumbing. This has attracted both crypto-native games and interest from major traditional gaming companies exploring digital ownership.
Is IMX legal in India?
Yes. IMX qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law — 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS on transfers. Both IMX and the in-game NFTs traded on Immutable are taxable as VDAs in India. See our India crypto tax guide and consult a professional.
π‘ A bit more detail
For when you want to go a little deeper.
How Immutable scales Ethereum for games
Immutable's technology has evolved. Its original Immutable X used a "zk-rollup" approach powered by StarkWare's technology — bundling many transactions and using advanced cryptography (zero-knowledge proofs) to settle them cheaply on Ethereum while making individual game actions essentially free and instant for players. Immutable has since expanded into a broader stack, including Immutable zkEVM — a zero-knowledge Ethereum-compatible chain (built in collaboration with Polygon) that lets developers use familiar Ethereum tools while getting gaming-grade performance. The throughline is using zero-knowledge cryptography to deliver the speed and low cost games need without sacrificing Ethereum's security.
Immutable Passport — hiding the complexity
One of Immutable's most important products for mainstream adoption is Passport, a wallet and identity system designed so players never have to deal with the intimidating parts of crypto. Instead of installing a wallet, writing down seed phrases, and manually approving transactions, players sign in with a simple, familiar login and Passport handles the blockchain interactions invisibly. This kind of seamless onboarding is widely seen as essential for blockchain gaming to reach ordinary players rather than just crypto enthusiasts — the technology has to disappear for mass adoption to happen, and Passport is Immutable's answer to that requirement.
Immutable provides excellent infrastructure, but it is making a bet on a sector — blockchain gaming — that has repeatedly generated hype without yet delivering a genuine breakout mainstream hit. Many blockchain games have struggled with the fundamental tension between being fun games and being financial earning schemes, often attracting players motivated by profit rather than enjoyment, which leads to unsustainable economies that collapse. Traditional gamers have frequently been hostile to NFTs. Immutable's success ultimately depends on great games actually being built and embraced by players on its platform — something it enables but cannot guarantee. The infrastructure can be excellent and the sector still disappoint. Live data: CoinGecko
The IMX token and its role
The IMX token is central to the Immutable ecosystem. It is used to pay fees on the network (such as a fee on marketplace trades), it can be staked to earn rewards and participate in securing and governing the ecosystem, and it incentivises activity across the platform. A portion of the fees generated by trading activity on Immutable flows back to token stakers, creating a link between ecosystem usage and token rewards. As with all platform tokens, IMX's long-term value depends on whether the games built on Immutable generate real, sustained trading and player activity.

For the technically curious.
The zk-rollup foundation and the move to zkEVM
Immutable's scaling rests on zero-knowledge rollup technology. A zk-rollup bundles thousands of transactions off-chain and generates a cryptographic "validity proof" — a mathematical guarantee that all those transactions were processed correctly — which is then verified on Ethereum. This is powerful because, unlike optimistic rollups (which assume validity and allow a week-long challenge period), zk-rollups prove validity immediately, enabling faster finality and withdrawals. Immutable X originally used StarkWare's StarkEx engine for this. The newer Immutable zkEVM, built with Polygon's technology, adds full Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility on top of the zk approach — meaning developers can use standard Ethereum smart contracts and tools while still getting the cheap, fast, zk-secured transactions that gaming requires. Offering both gives studios flexibility in how they build.
The economics of in-game asset trading
A core part of Immutable's model is the marketplace layer where in-game NFTs are bought and sold, and the protocol fee taken on these trades. This creates a potential revenue engine tied directly to gaming activity: as players trade items, cards, and assets, fees accrue, a portion flowing to IMX stakers. The appeal of this model is that it aligns the platform's success with genuine in-game economic activity rather than pure speculation on the token. The challenge is that it requires games with large, active player bases generating real trading volume — which brings the story back to the central dependency: the platform's economics only work if genuinely popular games exist on it.
The developer ecosystem and major partnerships
Immutable has worked hard to attract game studios, ranging from crypto-native projects to interest from established traditional gaming companies exploring digital ownership and Web3 features. It offers grants, technical support, and its full toolchain to lower the barrier for studios. The strategic vision is to become the default platform that any studio reaches for when adding true digital ownership to a game — the "Shopify of blockchain gaming," providing the infrastructure so studios do not have to build it. Securing a portfolio of quality games, and ideally a genuine hit, is the make-or-break factor, and Immutable's business development is heavily oriented toward this goal.
Gods Unchained and the proof-of-concept advantage
Immutable's ownership of Gods Unchained gives it something unusual: a flagship game that demonstrates its own technology, built by the same team. Gods Unchained proves the model end-to-end — players genuinely own their cards as NFTs, trade them on the marketplace, and play a game with real competitive depth, all without gas-fee friction thanks to Immutable's infrastructure. This serves as both a showcase and a continuous testing ground for Immutable's tools. It also means Immutable understands game development from the inside, which informs how it builds developer tools — an advantage over pure infrastructure providers who have never shipped a game themselves.
Honest assessment of the risks
Immutable is among the most credible and well-built platforms in blockchain gaming, with strong technology, a genuine game-development heritage, thoughtful onboarding via Passport, and real partnerships. Its central risk is not its own execution but the sector it depends on. Blockchain gaming has promised much and delivered few genuine mainstream successes; the tension between fun and financialisation has undermined many games; and traditional gamers often reject NFTs outright. Immutable can provide flawless infrastructure and still struggle if compelling, popular games do not materialise on it — its fortunes are tied to a sector whose breakout moment has been perpetually "coming soon." There is also competition from other gaming-focused chains and infrastructure. Immutable is a high-quality bet on blockchain gaming, but it is fundamentally a bet on that sector finally fulfilling its long-promised potential, which remains genuinely uncertain.
