What is ASI Alliance / Fetch.ai (FET)?

🟢 The simple version
Plain English — no jargon. Start here.
Fetch.ai is an AI agent network — autonomous software "agents" built on Fetch.ai can search for information, negotiate with other agents, complete tasks on your behalf, and interact with DeFi protocols, all coordinated through a decentralised marketplace, with FET (rebranding to ASI as part of the ASI Alliance) as the payment and governance token.
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that can perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions autonomously to achieve a goal. Unlike a chatbot (which answers one question at a time, with a human directing each step), an agent can string together multiple steps: "Find me the best price for ETH on any DEX, considering gas fees, and execute the swap if the price is better than Coinbase by more than 0.5%." The agent searches, compares, calculates, and executes — all without asking you at each step.
Fetch.ai's vision: a network where millions of AI agents operate autonomously on behalf of users, businesses, and machines. An energy company's agent negotiates electricity prices with a grid agent. A supply chain agent monitors port delays and automatically reroutes shipments. A DeFi agent rebalances a portfolio based on market conditions. The Fetch.ai Agentverse is the platform for creating, deploying, and discovering these agents.
The ASI Alliance — merger with Ocean and SingularityNET
In 2024, Fetch.ai announced the Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) Alliance — a merger of three major decentralised AI projects: Fetch.ai (AI agents), Ocean Protocol (decentralised data marketplace), and SingularityNET (AI service marketplace). All three tokens (FET, OCEAN, AGIX) are converting to a unified ASI token. The combined market cap at announcement was over $7 billion, making ASI Alliance one of the largest decentralised AI ecosystems. The merger aims to combine agent infrastructure (Fetch.ai) with data (Ocean) and AI models (SingularityNET) into a single interoperable AI economy.
Is FET/ASI legal in India?
Yes. FET (and the new ASI token) qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.
🟡 A bit more detail
For when you want to go a little deeper.
Fetch.ai's technical stack
Fetch.ai runs on its own Cosmos-based L1 blockchain. The Agentverse is a cloud platform for creating and hosting agents. The AI Engine interprets natural language requests and routes them to appropriate agents. The Almanac is a decentralised registry where agents advertise their services and capabilities. Together, these components form a marketplace where you can describe what you need in plain English and the network finds agents that can fulfil the request.
FET is used to pay for agent services, access the AI Engine, and participate in network governance. The ASI conversion means existing FET holders receive ASI at a defined ratio. The merged network aims to be the comprehensive infrastructure for decentralised AI — agents that can access datasets from Ocean Protocol and AI models from SingularityNET seamlessly.
Merging three separate protocols (each with their own community, tokenomics, and technical architecture) is complex. The FET → ASI conversion introduces supply dynamics as three token communities consolidate. The agent use cases, while compelling, remain largely futuristic — real-world adoption of autonomous AI agents for commercial tasks is still early. Live data: CoinGecko
Fetch.ai vs Bittensor vs Akash
Bittensor = ML model quality marketplace (miners compete with models, TAO rewards best outputs). Akash = raw GPU/CPU cloud compute marketplace (no AI-specific structure). Fetch.ai/ASI = AI agent infrastructure (agents completing tasks, accessing data and models). They target different layers: Akash is infrastructure, Bittensor is models, Fetch.ai is applications (agents that use infrastructure and models to complete real-world tasks).
