How Helium works

Proof of Coverage β€” how hotspots earn

Helium's Proof of Coverage uses a challenge system: "Challengers" (random hotspots) issue cryptographic challenges to "Challengees" (other hotspots). The Challengee must prove it received the challenge via radio frequency β€” proving it exists at its claimed location and has working radio hardware. "Witnesses" (nearby hotspots that observe the challenge-response) earn rewards for confirming coverage. This creates an interdependent earning system where hotspots are economically incentivised to maintain honest location reporting and consistent uptime.
