Lens Protocol is a decentralised social graph built by the Aave team — your followers, posts, and social connections are NFTs you own on-chain, meaning no platform can delete your account or take away your audience, and any app can be built on top of the same shared social graph.

What problem does Lens solve?

On Twitter/X, Instagram, or YouTube, your followers and content exist on someone else's servers. If the platform bans you, changes its algorithm, or shuts down — you lose everything. Your audience is not yours; it's rented from the platform. Lens Protocol flips this: your profile is an NFT you own in your wallet. Your followers are stored on-chain. Your posts (called "publications") are stored on decentralised storage (IPFS, Arweave). No company controls your social graph.

This creates portability. If you have 50,000 followers on a Lens-based app like Hey (formerly Lenster) and that app shuts down, you don't lose your followers — they exist on-chain. A new app can read the same Lens graph and show you your existing followers immediately. This is fundamentally different from any centralised social network where your audience is locked into that specific platform.

Who built Lens?

Lens Protocol was built by Stani Kulechov and the Aave team — the same people behind Aave, one of DeFi's largest lending protocols. This gave Lens significant credibility and resources at launch. Lens launched on Polygon in May 2022, chosen for low fees (since social interactions need to be cheap — you can't pay Ethereum gas fees to like a post). In 2024, Lens migrated to its own dedicated chain (Lens Chain) for even cheaper and faster social interactions.

Is Lens legal in India?

Yes. Lens-related tokens qualify as Virtual Digital Assets (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.

Lens v2 and the monetisation layer

Lens v2 (2023) introduced significantly more powerful social primitives. The key addition: "Open Actions" — programmable actions attached to any post. A creator can post content with an Open Action that says "anyone who collects this post pays 0.1 ETH, split 90% to me and 10% to the collector." This makes every Lens post potentially monetisable without a platform taking a cut. The creator-to-follower transaction is direct, on-chain, without an intermediary.

Other v2 features: "Follow NFTs" became more granular (different follow tiers with different permissions), profile NFTs became composable with DeFi (you can use your Lens profile as collateral in theory), and the module system was opened fully so any developer can create custom collect, follow, or reference modules. This extensibility is Lens's technical moat — it's a social protocol that other developers build on top of, not a finished social app.

Adoption challenge

Decentralised social has a classic cold-start problem: people go where their friends are. Despite strong technical design, Lens apps have a tiny fraction of the users of Twitter, Instagram, or even Farcaster. Network effects heavily favour incumbents. Lens vs Farcaster

Both are decentralised social protocols but with different architectures. Farcaster is "sufficiently decentralised" — profile data is on Ethereum, but actual posts (casts) are stored on Farcaster's own hubs (servers), making it faster but more centralised than Lens. Lens stores more on-chain and on decentralised storage (IPFS/Arweave), making it more decentralised but historically slower and pricier. Farcaster's Warpcast app grew faster; Lens has deeper DeFi composability. Both are early-stage with small user bases relative to centralised social networks.
