What is Orca (ORCA)?

🟢 The simple version
Plain English — no jargon. Start here.
Orca is one of Solana's leading DEXs — known for the cleanest user interface in the Solana ecosystem — offering concentrated liquidity pools called "Whirlpools" where liquidity providers choose price ranges to earn higher fees, and simple swaps for everyday traders.
Orca's place in Solana's DEX landscape
Solana has several competing DEXs. Raydium is the largest by volume — it serves as the backend liquidity for many Solana DeFi apps and hosts the majority of Pump.fun token launches. Jupiter is an aggregator that routes trades through Raydium, Orca, and others to find the best price. Orca's niche is quality: it has consistently been cited as Solana's most user-friendly DEX for both traders and liquidity providers.
Where Raydium is focused on market maker efficiency and high-volume trading, Orca focused on retail accessibility — simple swap interfaces, clear position management for LPs, and readable fee/APY displays. This matters for Solana's goal of onboarding non-crypto-native users into DeFi: Orca is the DEX you'd recommend to someone using Solana DeFi for the first time.
Whirlpools: Orca's concentrated liquidity
Orca's Whirlpools are concentrated liquidity pools (similar to Uniswap v3). LPs choose a price range — say, SOL between $80 and $200 — and all their capital earns fees only when the price is within that range. When price is in range, fee earnings are much higher than in standard AMM pools because your capital is more concentrated. When price moves outside your range, you earn zero fees and hold 100% of the lower-value asset (full impermanent loss risk). Whirlpool LP management is more active than standard AMM LP but significantly more capital-efficient.
Is ORCA legal in India?
Yes. ORCA qualifies as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.
🟡 A bit more detail
For when you want to go a little deeper.
ORCA token and governance
ORCA is Orca's governance and fee-sharing token. A portion of Whirlpool trading fees is distributed to ORCA stakers. Holders vote on protocol parameters including fee tiers for new pools, emission reward allocations, and protocol upgrades. ORCA has a fixed supply with emissions scheduled over time to incentivise LP activity — particularly in SOL/USDC, BONK/SOL, and other high-volume Whirlpool pairs.
Orca also builds tooling for LPs: position dashboards that show in-range time, fee earnings, and impermanent loss estimates. This tooling investment is part of Orca's "retail-first" positioning — most DEXs provide raw on-chain data; Orca wraps it in a UX that helps LPs make better decisions about when to rebalance or adjust ranges.
Whirlpools amplify both fees and impermanent loss. An out-of-range Whirlpool position can experience 100% impermanent loss on one side of the pair. For SOL/USDC LP during SOL's 2022 crash from $180 to $12, narrow-range Whirlpool positions suffered severe losses. Always understand your price range and the impermanent loss profile before providing Whirlpool liquidity. Live data: CoinGecko
Orca vs Raydium vs Jupiter
These three aren't direct competitors — they serve different roles. Raydium is the primary liquidity layer (most new token launches happen on Raydium). Jupiter is the routing aggregator (most Solana wallets use Jupiter for swaps). Orca is a DEX that Jupiter routes through, known for its Whirlpool implementation and UX quality. For LP-ing, Orca's interface is preferred by many Solana DeFi users. For simple swaps, Jupiter finds the best price across all DEXs including Orca. For token launches and high-frequency trading, Raydium is dominant.
