What does VeChain actually do?
Physical goods — luxury handbags, pharmaceutical drugs, food, car parts — have authenticity and provenance problems. Is this Gucci bag genuine or a fake? Did this medicine stay refrigerated throughout shipping? Is this organic food actually from the certified farm? VeChain attaches unique IDs (via QR codes, NFC chips, or RFID tags) to physical items. At each stage of the supply chain — manufacturing, shipping, warehouse, retail — the item's status is recorded on the VeChain blockchain. Anyone can scan the item and verify its complete history.
The data is immutable: once written to VeChain's blockchain, it can't be altered. This is the core value proposition for enterprises — a tamper-proof record of a product's journey. For consumers: scan a wine bottle and see which vineyard, which bottling date, which shipping container. For a luxury brand: prove to customers that their bag is authentic without relying on the brand's own database (which could be hacked or altered).
VET and VTHO — the dual token system
VeChain uses two tokens. VET is the main token — you hold it to stake and generate VTHO. VTHO (VeThor Energy) is the gas token — used to pay for transactions on the VeChain network. This separation exists so enterprises can predict and budget transaction costs: they hold VET to generate VTHO, and use VTHO for their supply chain transactions. When crypto markets are volatile, VET price fluctuates — but VTHO generation rate can be adjusted by governance to keep real transaction costs stable for enterprise users.

VeChain's enterprise partnerships
VeChain has an unusually deep roster of enterprise partnerships for a public blockchain. Walmart China uses VeChain for food traceability — scanning a pork product reveals its farm, slaughterhouse, and cold chain data. DNV (one of the world's largest maritime certification bodies) uses VeChain for shipping certifications. BMW uses VeChain's ToolChain platform for car part tracking and mileage verification. LVMH (the luxury conglomerate behind Louis Vuitton, Dior, Bulgari) participated in early VeChain pilots for luxury goods authentication.
This enterprise adoption is what distinguishes VeChain from most public blockchains that have "partnership" press releases but little actual usage. VeChain has real enterprise deployments — though the scale of on-chain activity from these deployments remains modest compared to DeFi chains. The challenge: enterprise blockchain adoption is slow. VeChain Thor — the technical platform
VeChainThor is the underlying blockchain — EVM-compatible (runs Ethereum-style smart contracts) with Proof of Authority consensus (100 Authority Masternodes validate transactions). PoA is semi-centralised by design: only known, KYC'd entities can be Authority Masternodes. This trade-off gives VeChain predictable performance and regulatory friendliness for enterprises — they can sign agreements with VeChain Foundation knowing the validators are identified entities, not anonymous miners. The downside: it's less decentralised than Ethereum or Bitcoin.
