What is Ethereum Name Service (ENS)?

🟢 The simple version
Plain English — no jargon. Start here.
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is the decentralised naming system for Web3 — replacing long crypto wallet addresses like 0x71C...b33F with human-readable names like "alice.eth", which can also resolve to websites, social profiles, and any on-chain data.
What problem does ENS solve?
Ethereum wallet addresses are 42-character hexadecimal strings — impossible to remember and easy to mistype. Sending ETH to the wrong address is irreversible. ENS maps these addresses to human-readable names: instead of copying 0x71C7656EC7ab88b098defB751B7401B5f6d8976F, you send to "vitalik.eth" and ENS resolves it to the correct address. The risk of sending to the wrong address drops dramatically.
But ENS does more than address resolution. A ".eth" name is an NFT (ERC-721) stored on Ethereum — you own it, not a company. It can store: your primary ETH address, BTC address, email, Twitter/X handle, avatar, website URL, and arbitrary text records. It becomes your Web3 identity — a single .eth name that represents you across any compatible app. Many DeFi protocols and NFT platforms display your .eth name instead of your raw address.
How ENS registration works
You register a .eth name at app.ens.domains by paying an annual registration fee in ETH. Fees scale with name length: 3-character names cost significantly more than 5+ character names (shorter = more desirable = higher price). Registration is for 1-5 years at a time, renewable. The name is yours as an NFT for the registration period; if you don't renew, it expires and becomes available again. Premium names (dictionary words, short names, famous names) were initially available at flat registration prices — many were scooped up immediately and resold on NFT markets for significant premiums.
Is ENS legal in India?
Yes. ENS token and .eth names qualify as Virtual Digital Assets (VDA) under Indian law. 30% tax on gains and 1% TDS applies. Always consult a tax professional.
🟡 A bit more detail
For when you want to go a little deeper.
ENS DAO and the ENS token
ENS launched its governance token (ENS) in November 2021 via a retroactive airdrop to anyone who had registered an ENS name before October 31, 2021. The airdrop was one of crypto's most generous: long-term ENS users received thousands of dollars worth of tokens, with the amount scaling by how long they had held names and how far in advance they had renewed them. The airdrop rewarded genuine users rather than speculators — a well-regarded approach that set a standard for future airdrops.
ENS DAO governs the protocol: token holders vote on the ENS Constitution (the founding governance document), fee structures, treasury spending, and protocol upgrades. The DAO controls the ENS treasury — funded by registration and renewal fees — which is substantial given ENS's dominant position in Web3 naming. ENS DAO has funded public goods in the Ethereum ecosystem with grants.
ENS has competition: Unstoppable Domains (.crypto, .nft, .x) sells one-time purchase domains (no renewal fees) across multiple chains. Lens Protocol handles social identity. Base Names (.base.eth subnames) are free for Base users. These alternatives haven't dislodged ENS's dominant position on Ethereum but do reduce its total addressable market. Live data: CoinGecko
ENS beyond Ethereum
ENS expanded to support multi-chain address resolution — a single .eth name can store your Bitcoin, Solana, Cosmos, and other chain addresses alongside Ethereum. ENS also deployed CCIP-Read (EIP-3668) which allows off-chain data to be attached to ENS names, enabling cheaper and faster subname issuance. Protocols like Coinbase (cb.id), Uniswap, and Linea issue free subnames to their users using ENS infrastructure — "yourname.cb.id" resolves via ENS even though Coinbase manages the registry off-chain.
