The Échelle des Crus — Village Classification System

The Échelle des Crus (ladder of growths) is Champagne's unique village-level quality classification, originally created to regulate the price paid to growers for their grapes by merchant houses. Under the historic system (introduced 1911; refined multiple times through the 20th century), each of the 319 classified Champagne villages was assigned a percentage score from 80% to 100%, representing the fraction of the full grape price that village's fruit would command. A village rated 100% — Grand Cru — received the full established price; a village at 90% received 90% of that price; a village at 80% received 80%. Authorised Grape Varieties

Why Champagne? — The Climate Paradox
Champagne's marginal northern climate (average growing season temperature ~11–13°C; 49°N latitude) that makes still wine production precarious is precisely what makes it ideal for traditional-method sparkling wine. Jacques Selosse — The Grower Champagne Icon

Anselme Selosse — who took over the family domaine in Avize (Côte des Blancs Grand Cru) from his father Jacques in the late 1980s — is the most influential and controversial figure in modern Champagne. Trained in Burgundy by his friend Henri Jayer, Selosse applied Burgundian terroir philosophy to Champagne: expressing individual vineyard character rather than house blending consistency. His innovations include barrel fermentation and partial oxidative aging of reserve wines (contrasting with the reductive, stainless steel-dominated large-house approach), extremely low dosage (zero or near-zero on most expressions), no or minimal filtration, biodynamic viticulture, and a focus on individual lieu-dit (named vineyard plot) expressions. Jacques Selosse Substance (a perpetual-solera-system Chardonnay), Initial (NV blanc de blancs), and the lieu-dit single-vineyard cuvées are among the world's most sought-after Champagnes at auction, fetching prices comparable to prestige cuvées of the major houses despite tiny production (~60,000 bottles per year).

Champagne is France's most economically significant AOC wine region and one of the world's most valuable agricultural land markets. Total AOC Champagne vineyards: approximately 34,000 hectares.
